What we aim to solve

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2016, 66,300 adults in Bernalillo County over the age of 18 were in need of a high school diploma. In fiscal year 2017-18, only 4.7% or 3,116 of this population were served by five (5) New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) local AE Program Providers. Of five Adult Education providers in the central region, Albuquerque Adult Learning Center, Inc., dba ABQ-ALC, (formerly ABQ-GED®), is the smallest community-based and only non-profit. ABQ-ALC provides FREE Adult Education (AE) and transitional assistance services to individuals sixteen and older whose educational goals range from basic literacy to obtaining a High School Equivalency (HSE). Additionally, over 300 students are served each year but the need is great. Each year, hundreds of prospective participants reach us at City and County community centers where we operate. Many more can be served with your support. In FY 2021, 99% of assessed students entered below the 9th-grade level.

Adult Education Services

A community-based organization providing High School Equivalency [HSE] Preparation, Apprenticeship and Career Pathways Training, College Assistance, STEAM and Family Engagement activities to promote a holistic family approach to lifelong learning.

Albuquerque Adult Learning Center (ABQ-ALC) offers Adult Basic Education programs: (ABE, Pre-HSE); High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation; and Distance Education classes with day and evening options available at most sites. Each class provides one-on-one tutoring and an Individualized Learning Plan. Apprenticeship, Career Pathway and Transitional Assistance services are offered individually. Our new services (STEAM and Family Engagement activities) supports families by bringing parents and children into learning environments that promote problem solving together while having fun.

Our Transitional Assistance Program addresses next steps for our students and graduates as they explore career goals upon entry, during enrollment, and up to one year following exit from our programs.

Career Pathways Coordinator supports students with life skills and workforce readiness training in support of participants preparing for their High School Equivalency Credential and/or entry to college or employment. ABQ-ALC's transitional assistance program is one of our organization's best practices and an innovative model which helps ABQ-ALC to track and provide the communities it serves with direct impact and return on investment data from HSE attainment, PSE enrollment, Entered, Retained Employment and/or getting a better job.

ABQ-ALC works to provide youth between the ages of 16 and 17, and adults 18 and over, with a second chance. Our organization's vision is to foster an individual's desire for education, mobility, and independence. To that end, our focus is to support participants each year in entering our programs to:

1) Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program:
a) increase the number of students making one or more measurable skills gains to advance from Adult Basic;
b) increase the number of students advancing to the High School Equivalency (HSE) cohort;
c) increase the number of HSE program completions (students entering above 9th-grade equivalency levels);
d) increase overall enrollment (the total number of students served over the prior fiscal year)

2) Transitional Assistance now Career Pathways Program:
a) increase the number of graduate students transitioning to Post-Secondary Education over the prior year;
b) increase the number of graduate students transitioning to Employment/better employment and/or retaining employment;
c) increase quarterly wage earnings over the prior year as evidenced by graduates and/or left students gaining employment within state proscribed timelines.
The skills provided in conjunction with AE programming is proving to be key to successful transitions to work as well as post-secondary education/college.

Our key strategies include both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Additionally,
1) Highly trained staff;
2) Serving its students within close proximity to where they live;
3) Individualized learning modalities;
4) Partnerships and community development;
5) Leveraging donor and grant funds to diversify program services;
6) Our organization has been recognized for its continuous program improvement practices, particularly for applying its data to inform persistence.

ABQ-ALC's organizational capabilities include qualified and trained personnel to offer several learning modalities:
1) Key personnel are highly qualified and experienced with over 45 years of combined Adult Education experience;
2) The organization leverages space in community health and social service centers for in-person instructional services connecting students to wraparound services;
3) In-person, online/distance learning, and hybrid learning services;
4) Annually renews and/or develops new partnerships as evidenced by Memorandums of Agreement/Understanding;
5) Active board membership and meetings guiding the organization with fund diversification;
6) Hired an experienced Intake Coordinator with prior LACES database background, Program Director offers weekly staff training and regular meetings every six weeks to review and address data issues/concerns.


Our annual program report and transitions report identify meeting and exceeding all but one of five state benchmarks.
1) Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program:
a) measurable skills gains actually increased over the prior fiscal year despite statewide closures (pandemic);
b) the number of students advancing to the High School Equivalency (HSE) cohort increased by 400%;
c) The number of High School Equivalency (HSE) credentials remained the same despite statewide closures, 75% streamlining from ABE cohort group;
d) increase overall enrollment (the total number of students served over the prior fiscal year); Due to the pandemic our overall enrollment decreased by 30% (315 to 235); however, this occurred during statewide closures during the pandemic.

2) Transitional Assistance now Career Pathways Program:
a) 25% of graduates transitioned to Post-Secondary Education over the prior year;
b) 46 left students transitioned to Employment/better employment and/or retaining employment;
d) % increase in quarterly wage earnings over the prior year as evidenced by graduates and/or left students gaining employment within state proscribed timelines.
