ANIMAL SHELTER VOLUNTEERS OF TEXAS INC
Help Us Help Them
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The animal shelters and animal control facilities located in and around Montgomery County, Texas, are overflowing with dogs and cats which have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Dogs and cats are being euthanized to make space for more and more incoming dogs and cats. ASVT wants to reduce the number of companion animals killed simply to open kennels for other companion animals by promoting spay and neuter surgery.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. To reduce the number of abandoned, abused and neglected companion animals in Montgomery County, Texas.
2. To increase the number of companion animals that are spayed or neutered in Montgomery County, Texas.
3. To send as many adoptable dogs as possible to rescues and shelters in other states which have higher adoption rates.
4. To educate the residents of Montgomery County about the need for spaying/neutering of companion animals.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. ASVT will continue to provide vouchers to Montgomery County residents with low incomes for low cost spay/neuter surgery.
2. ASVT will continue to accept companion animals from the public, from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and small shelters/animal control facilities in outlying rural communities. These companion animals will be provided with spay/neuter surgery, microchips and all core vaccinations and any other medical tests necessary to ensure these animals are healthy and ready for adoption.
3. ASVT will continue to send on average 15-20 dogs and puppies each month to rescues and shelters in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Ontario, Canada.
4. ASVT will provide volunteers for speaking engagements to schools and civic organizations to educate the public about the importance of spaying or neutering companion animals.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
ASVT has experienced volunteers who are knowledgeable about animal welfare and running the business side of a non-profit. We have a stable board of directors and a stable volunteer base to help with programs and with involving new volunteers. ASVT is able to work effectively with other community groups to improve the shelter services.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
1. ASVTs number of adoptions of companion animals has increased each year. We intend to continue this trend.
2. Our increased exposure in the community has resulted in more requests for assistance with the cost of spay/neuter surgeries as well as intake of unwanted puppy and kitten litters.
3. In 2020, ASVT received a grant from the Humane Society of Montgomery County (HSMC) which provides funds to offset increased spay/neuter costs associated with the increase in adoptions as a result of the COVID-19 quarantine.
