Mission

We invest in youth by providing trumpets and mentorship to enrich their lives through music.

Notes from the nonprofit

Music is the universal language of our world. It is a part of life in every country and culture. It is also a powerful tool to help children learn and shape their lives. Music fosters the development of attention and listening skills; it assists in emotional development; and music involvement is known to enhance self-esteem and confidence. Music is also linked to improved math, memory and reading skills.

When students are given a trumpet, they sign a contract agreeing to practice one hour a day, maintain the trumpet, as well as teach, help and perform for other kids. They are also encouraged to give the trumpet to the school if they decide to quit playing.

Our participants are encouraged to learn music theory and compose music with the help of the Berklee City of Music's Pulse Program that is administered by Freddie Jones.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Trumpets

A youth who has demonstrated an interest in playing an instrument is given a trumpet and agrees to practice at least one hour a day. Mentoring is provided, as well as an opportunity to utilize the Berklee School of Music's Pulse program, where youth can compose music and share their musical talents with other like-minded students. Students are encouraged to participate in performance opportunities within the organization.

If the student decides to discontinue playing the trumpet he agrees to return it to either the school band instructor, or to Freddie Jones.

During Covid-19 isolation, Freddie Jones had to be creative in mentoring the youth. He developed a "Zoom Hang" where the youth are able to come on and perform. In addition to the youth, he had professional trumpet players and teachers on the Zoom. Sometimes they talked about their career and told their stories. Every session the youth are critique by these professionals and given tips. We are back to in-person mentoring.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth
Economically disadvantaged people

Because of Trumpets4Kids affiliation with Berklee School of Music, Interlochen and other music programs, some of our youth have attended music summer camps. This deepens their knowledge of music and gives them opportunities to have tutelage with a variety of music professionals. We would like to provide other students with the same opportunity.

Population(s) Served

Trumpets4Kids performs in various places within the DFW area. There is an expense for the transportation, food and other needed items.

Additionally, Trumpets4Kids youth need to attend professional performances in the area. The tickets are sometimes donated, but other times must be purchased. There is also an expense for transportation.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Children
Low-income people

At the end of the school year, we would like to provide the students with an awards dinner to reward their participation in the program. Their parents and teachers could attend to support the student in their efforts to become better musicians and citizens. The cost would be for a location, food, and trophies.

This is a program that has not been implemented yet.

Population(s) Served

The first Saturday of March we have a Trumpet Competition. Several school bands, home-schooled youth, and individuals come to compete in the Trumpet Wars. We have Master Clinics for the youth and performances by colleges and professionals for the youth.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The goal for Trumpets4Kids is to continue providing trumpets for youth, provide them with an award ceremony, and facilitate growth musically by sending them to summer music camps, professional performances, and master classes. These services not only impact the participants, but the community through the promotion of positive activities and experiences, allowing people from different communities to come together.

Continue soliciting donations to provide trumpets. Using 'Kick Starter" and other fund stimulating projects to acquire the funds to provide the summer camps, performances and transportation. Organize an awards banquet and find funding.

Trumpets4Kids is able to provide all of our goals if funding is provided. We have the contacts with trumpet manufacturers and have received discounted prices. We have connections with professional musicians and utilize those connections as often as possible. Many of our donations are from people who have experience with Trumpets4Kids and believe in the mission. We are working on fundraiser ideas, so that we have the funds available when an opportunity arises.

Since 2007, we have given on the average of ten trumpets per year. The youth have performed and been involved in music theory, composing and have been mentored by Mr. Jones, as well as other professional musicians. Two youth have attended music camp in the past. We have facilitated youth achieving membership in the Ft. Worth Youth Symphony Orchestra and receiving scholarships to colleges.

We have not had an award ceremony/banquet for the youth and their families and teachers. This would bring everyone together for the celebration of musical talent.
