What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Millions of Americans delay or do not receive critical medical care— due to the lack of affordable and reliable transportation to their healthcare treatment destinations. Patient Airlift Services (PALS SkyHope) believes that when someone is experiencing an illness or humanitarian crisis—that receiving the best medical care, compassionate support or disaster relief— is a basic—human—right, no matter how far that care, or support is from home. While there are around dozens of volunteer pilot organizations across the country, each serving small sections of the population with free air transportation, there are massive gaps in service areas—systems integration—and unified industry standards. PALS SkyHope has created a strategic national expansion plan to address this critical transportation barrier, allowing families to access the care that they need.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Medical Flights

We arrange free air transportation for individuals and families traveling for medical consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and more.

Population(s) Served
People with diseases and illnesses
Economically disadvantaged people

The consequences of a life-threatening illness go further than the individual; family members are also affected both financially and emotionally, often having to make heartbreaking decisions. PALS SkyHope is a support system that arranges compassion flights to keep family members connected during treatment, while enabling them to sustain employment. In addition, PALS SkyHope arranges compassion flights for children and their families to illness specific camps, such as cancer or burn camps, which allows time for normalcy and comradery with others in the same situation.

Population(s) Served
Economically disadvantaged people
People with diseases and illnesses

PALS for Patriots was launched to serve military personnel who suffered serious, service connected
injury, by transporting them to specialized military medical centers, adaptive retreats for the veteran and their family as well as morale-boosting events. Thanks to the support of Major League Baseball, PALS is able to escort groups of combat wounded military veterans to MLB games and unique opportunities that help to advance the healing process. It’s our privilege to assist in eliminating transportation as a barrier for our military allowing them to access services they need and deserve.

Population(s) Served
Veterans
Military personnel

The PALS Sky Hope Disaster Relief Program encompasses humanitarian airlift support during times of natural and national disasters. Thanks to our charitable aviation community, including being part of the NBAA HERO Program, PALS is able to provide nimble and effective air support in the immediate aftermath when a disaster strikes. The PALS team arranges delivery of supplies and relief workers to areas that might not be accessible by any other means of transportation, becoming a lifeline to those in need. Most recently, PALS was at the forefront of the aviation community’s response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, with nearly 500 flights transporting relief workers, evacuees and 500,000 lbs. of much needed supplies.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Over the next 5-7 years, our vision is to create a best-in-class—nationwide charitable aviation organization— that combines ALL aviation assets under a collaborative umbrella, providing the only comprehensive and scalable model in the country. Thus creating a network of knowledge and services to mitigate the transportation gap.

PALS SkyHope will be incorporating smart business strategies into our non-profit operations, to have an even greater impact on those in need. As well as pioneering robust strides in the charitable aviation arena on a national level, by leading standards on industry transparency, accountability and efficiency.

Our essential pillars of focus are: Community Outreach; Expanded Volunteer Pilot Community; Operational Excellence; Innovative Fundraising; and Brand Affinity to foster ownership in the cause.

PALS SkyHope has 10 full-time employees, an active, supportive and engaged non-compensated independent Board of Directors, and over 13,500 volunteers which include over 650 command pilots.

Moreover, PALS SkyHope utilizes best-in-class technology to connect patients in need of free air transportation to volunteer pilots ready to assist them. Every flight request that comes into PALS SkyHope requires approximately 30 "touch points" to be accomplished. Our mission coordination team completes an intake form over the phone with the patient, collecting information about the individuals traveling, the appointment date, the releasing and treating medical physicians, diagnosis, and more. The flight is then made available in our online pilot community, where pilots can search for and sign on to flights that they are able to assist with. For flights that are a greater distance, or where a volunteer pilot is not available, we utilize commercial airline vouchers and business aviation [to the extent we have the recourses].

Since inception PALS SkyHope has directly served over 3,000 families with over 28,000 free flights– totaling over 4.9M Passenger Miles. We anticipate that our strategic plan and nation expansion over the next 4 years, will help us serve nearly 10,000 families with over 40,000 flights by the end of 2026.
