Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Family Bridges works to build resilient communities where flourishing families raise purpose-driven children
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Family Bridges aims to achieve its goals by partnering with community leaders, including service agencies, not for profits, municipal resources, faith-based institutions, volunteer organizations and academic institutions to provide research-based programs and first class information resources to some of the most disadvantaged communities in our nation. By aligning ourselves with existing community leaders, Family Bridges is able to enjoy the trust of the people we serve on their behalf. Our tools, resources and programs can help community leaders address needs in their communities that might otherwise go unanswered by providing not only the educational materials themselves, but a plan and a proven system to delivery that greatly simplifies demands on these leaders.
Family Bridges is also committed to the development of new community leaders, and seeks to advocate for and develop local investment through our Avance con Lazos de Familia program, which provides a roadmap and support for new communities to organize invested stakeholders, develop a local chapter, and raise funds from within the community to bring in the resources community members themselves identify as most needed. Based on the practice of tandas in the Hispanic community, these chapters provide a way for communities to pool resources for public gain and secure local sponsorships with the support and initial matching investments by Family Bridges effect a lasting change.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
In the past ten years, Family Bridges has grown from a vision of an alliance of Hispanic community resources to a nationally recognized non-profit bringing unique resources to these children and families most in need. While we retain a strong presence in our hometown of Chicago, Illinois, we have expanded area services south as far as Joliet, west to Kankakee and we are currently developing partnerships as far north as Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Satellite operations and Avance chapters are active in Phoenix, Arizona and Puerto Rico, with plans for further expansion in the coming year. Family Bridges partnership with the up-and-coming Gloo social and educational networking platform places us in a strong position to deliver our content and services nationwide, reaching individuals who may live far away from any existing Family Bridges or Avance chapter - and perhaps inspire them to take the first steps to start a chapter of their own in their community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Family Bridges has moved from a small group of dedicated individuals working to make a difference in one community to a national non-profit advocating for children, families and communities as one of the trusted names in Hispanic service organizations. We are currently undergoing a core shift from reliance on funding from federal and private grants to providing sustainable services, and developing a model which can be used to aid other community leaders in following in our footsteps to create a sustainable service provision within their own community. This is, needless to say, a big transition and will likely take a year or more before we can realistically measure our success at the endeavor, but we have every confidence that the message we have is vital, the people we serve are hungry to hear it, and the time and place we occupy is the right one to serve the need.
