Mission

VLCM Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to eradicating cancer by funding research at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, where world-class researchers are working toward the same goal every day. They do the science while we work hard to help them pay for it—their work costs about $120 million a year. We've supported them for a decade and have donated over $750,000 through our charity golf tournament alone. Last year's tournament resulted in a donation of over $119,000. We also provide their IT support for free. This year, we aim to donate $140,000. This amount is small in comparison to the institute's costs, but we have helped pay for incredible groundbreaking research. We are proud and deeply dedicated to the continuation of our work for the researchers there.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

About 1/2 of all men and 1/3 of all women in America will deal with cancer in their lifetimes. This group of diseases is sometimes difficult to treat and thus deadly. Cancer research is the only way to find better ways to prevent, treat, and cure cancer. However, such science is commonly underfunded by government agencies and thus private donations are a crucial source of funding for cancer research. Without work by non-profit organizations, the search for cures is crippled by the inability to afford to do the necessary work.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

VLCM Foundation aims to eradicate cancer.

We do this by raising money for researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute, one of the best and most productive cancer research centers in the United States. We raise money by building a community of those who otherwise might not be approached for donations, and help them to be more invested in the cause by educating them about cancer research. We maintain a blog, other social media, and an email system to make the research published by Huntsman Cancer Institute and other leading cancer centers more understandable to the public who helps fund it.

VLCM Foundation maintains close contact with administrators and scientists at Huntsman Cancer Institute, and we have staff members certified for work in biomedical human research and with backgrounds in journalism. Those strengths ensure we are capable of fully utilizing our strategies, as well as that we never lose sight of our goals and strategies. VLCM Foundation is associated with an IT company called VLCM. VLCM pays all the expenses for VLCM Foundation, meaning that every cent of every donation to the non-profit will fund cancer research.

As an example of progress, in 2016 researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute found a key way that a childhood cancer--Ewing sarcoma--works and were able to suggest a treatment based on that information. That treatment enters clinical trials in 2017. There is hope that the possible treatment can help eradicate that cancer. What's next for us at VLCM Foundation is a hope to branch out in terms of new types of fundraising events, so we can continue to find more donors who might not otherwise become passionate about and engaged in funding cancer research.
