What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Kids on Course
Kids on Course is a program in three Cedar Rapids elementary schools and two Cedar Rapids middle schools. The over-arching goal of Kids on Course is to help students realize their academic and development potential, through experiences in the arts and sciences, fitness and nutrition and more. We accomplish our goals through providing enrichment opportunities for students, breaking down barriers that prevent success inside and outside the classroom, engaging the families of students and providing academic supports so all of our students are at grade level in reading and math.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Zach Johnson Foundation and Kids on Course is aiming to get all kids we serve on a path to high school graduation and post-secondary education. We truly believe that any child can accomplish this when given the right tools, resources and support mechanisms throughout their educational career.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The signature program of the Zach Johnson Foundation is a college preparatory program called Kids on Course. Kids on Course provides tutoring, summer learning, enrichment, family engagement and mentoring to students starting in first grade. Students who stay in the program through high school graduation receive a college scholarship. In 2017 the program served about 800 students with more than 70% qualifying for subsidized school meals due to family income. In the 2016-2017 school year 505 students received tutoring services as elementary students through Kids on Course. 92% of those students grew their reading scores during tutoring. 54% of these students are now on grade level in reading. More than 750 students participated in the seven-week Kids on Course University (KCU) summer program. Preliminary data show students in KCU slightly increased their reading performance when they returned to school in the fall. But those who didn't attend KCU experienced significant losses in reading skills, a full ten more percentage points below benchmark when they returned to school in the fall. Rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders attended a free five-week summer program intended to boost preparedness for the upcoming school year and build positive adult and peer relationships. The average increase in math scores was 42%. Parent survey responses show 100% of children enjoyed Scholar Camp and 97% thought their kids grew in reading over the summer. ACT prep, FAFSA completion support, college visits, application guidance and trades/apprenticeship exploration are all part of Kids on Course in high school.
