Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to serve Christian missionaries by working with them to generate accurate and easily understandable Bible translations through a simpler, faster, and less expensive process.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In order to quickly translate the entire Bible and other Christian literature into all of the world’s languages, we’ve developed a software system that greatly increases the speed of translation. Our system is not like Google Translate, which uses a statistical approach dependent on a large body of translated texts. We analyze the meaning of the Bible text very thoroughly, and our software uses a rules-based system to produce high quality translations that are then edited by mother-tongue translators. Our software can also produce different translations tailored to specific audiences within that people group (e.g., churched adults, unchurched adults, churched children, and unchurched children).
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The people working on our project include Ph.D. scientists trained in linguistics. Our board members include people experienced in Bible translation management. We also have several volunteers working with us. We have developed an advanced software system called The Bible Translators Assistant (TBTA), which is freely available at https://alltheword.org/our-downloads/.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
About 25% of the Bible has been analyzed. In Tagalog, the major language of the Philippines, we have translated Genesis, Joshua, Judges, Exodus 1-20, 1&2 Samuel, Jonah, Nahum, and Philippians. This language is useful as a gateway language to facilitate translations into related languages. One of these languages is Ayta Mag-Indi. We have translated Ruth and Esther into that language. Another is Botolan Sambal. We have translated Ruth into that language. In China we have made considerable progress on the grammar and lexicon for a specific language that does not yet have any Christian literature, and we have translated Ruth and Esther into that language. Although the amounts of translation for these languages is currently modest, there is a big investment to get any results using our method. But once we start to generate translations of some books, it becomes much easier to generate translations of other books.
