What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Governance and rights
BBC Media Action’s governance and rights programmes support more accountable, inclusive and peaceful states and societies. We produce a range of editorially rigorous and informative factual programmes, engaging entertainment shows and digital media to help people hold those in power to account, understand their rights and bridge social and political division. This can include drama programmes, discussion shows, public service advertisements (PSAs) and social media. Whenever possible, we work in partnership with community, national and international media to extend the reach of our programmes and we strengthen the capacity of our media and communication partners.
Our work aims to help people from all sections of society:
Hold those in power to account for the decisions they make
Understand and uphold their fundamental rights and freedoms
Negotiate their differences peacefully
Health
Good communication is critical to good health – whether it is helping people talk about sensitive issues, giving them clear and unbiased information about available services, or countering myths and rumours surrounding diseases. We use media and communication to build people’s knowledge, encourage them to talk to each other and adopt healthier practices – and to shift beliefs and attitudes that prevent people from enjoying good health. We help hold those responsible for health services to account.
Our projects range from factual radio and TV shows to drama and light entertainment and social media; from mobile-phone-based services to face-to-face communication such as street theatre and discussion groups. We frequently work with partners to tackle reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, and communicable diseases, as well as encouraging people to find ways to improve their nutrition, hygiene and sanitation.
We have recently been supporting the overall information ecosystem to communicate effectively around Covid-19 in response to the current health crisis.
Resilience and humanitarian response
BBC Media Action uses media and communication to help people respond positively to severe challenges. In particular, we aim to increase people’s ability to secure food and water, improve their economic opportunities, and reduce the risk of disaster. We also help people to survive and cope with humanitarian crises. We do this by providing information, supporting dialogue, exploring attitudes and social norms, and motivating people to take action.
We carry out capacity strengthening with local media, aid agencies and local governments to improve their ability to communicate with people faced with on issues related to resilience and emergency response. We work with media to reach people with creative, engaging content ranging from radio programmes for farmers to reality-based television shows to interactive mobile apps for Syrian refugees. We also conduct Outreach to spark discussion and debate amongst people to help them consider options and make informed decisions.
We share the learning gained through our project work with policy makers, academics and other practitioners to increase understanding and shape policy and strategy around the role of media and communication for resilience and humanitarian response. We do this by publishing briefings, and convening and taking part in conferences, workshops and working groups.
