Shared Steps Through Cancer
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
At Team Tony, it is our mission to offer 1-to-1 support and resources for those battling cancer. We pair local cancer survivors and caregivers with cancer fighters and caregivers to help inspire and support them throughout their fight, and ensure that no one faces cancer alone.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Peer-to-Peer Cancer Support
Hearing you have cancer is terrifying! Our peer-mentoring program matches a trained cancer survivor or caregiver (Teammate), who are volunteers, with a newly diagnosed cancer fighter or one who is caring for someone with cancer. A Teammate understands what going through cancer is like and offers encouragement, insight, and inspiration. We match Teammates based on cancer diagnosis, age, gender, and similar life experiences. Knowing someone is there to share experiences makes a big difference while going through this tough time.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our Vision is to ensure that no one on The Florida Suncoast faces Cancer alone. Through our free peer to peer mentor program, we work to match newly diagnosed cancer fighters and caregivers with others who have already been through this journey, someone who can relate on a very personal level to what they are going through. We also try to alleviate the financial burden of a new cancer diagnosis by offering financial assistance for medical expenses incurred due to a cancer diagnosis to those enrolled in our peer to peer mentor program.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In order to further our mission of 1-to-1 support and resources for local cancer fighters and caregivers, it is important to continuously spread the word of the foundation and its programs. Our strategy is to make sure that Team Tony is visible in the community, and that people know about our support program and medical grant program.
We aim to educate and inform the local community about the importance of support during the fight against cancer, and to encourage people to reach out to Team Tony.
By engaging the community, we can ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We inform the public and private sectors about Team Tony and its programs through active and passive avenues. We engage in social media, leave brochures at medical offices, and keep our website current. We also create relationships with local oncology and radiation offices in the area by hosting informative lunch and learn sessions where we educate the medical staff on our support program and medical grant program.
We have easy to use referral forms that enable doctors and nurses to request 1-to-1 support for their patients. We also take requests for support through our website, telephone, email, and in person.
We engage the local community by volunteering at events, setting up information booths, and by hosting cancer connection events.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Team Tony saw steady growth since it was founded in 2010. In the past year alone, Team Tony has been able to match 464 cancer fighters and caregivers for 1-to-1 support in the last 5 years. We were also able to recruit 175 new cancer survivors and caregivers who act as our volunteer mentors (Teammates). Each of these Teammates has undergone formal training workshops in order to properly equip them with the necessary skills for offering effective and empathetic support to others.
Team Tony also offers a small Medical Grant to the cancer fighters and caregivers in our 1-to-1 support program. This grant is allocated for expenses that have been incurred due to an individual's cancer diagnosis, up to a maximum of $2000 per fighter. It encompasses any medical cost related to treatment or recovery.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
