Young Entrepreneurs |Business Building

This class is structured to give youth, ages 9 and up, an understanding and opportunity to create business plans. Installing entrepreneurial confidence in the youth and giving them the tools to go out and further develop their own ideas. Each week there will be a lecture to discuss a new subject area (i.e. product & services, pricing, team building, customer research, market research, marketing and sales). As each student or group develops their business, they will utilize the software LivePlan to create their business plan. LivePlan is one of the best available business plan applications. The applications help guide entrepreneurs with articulating their ideas, developing their go to market, and building projections. At the culmination of the class students will present business plans to a mock panel of business owners as if they were gaining seed funding.

The Unfinished Learning program is designed to assist students with homework and to ensure that they understand grade level content. Because students are not performing at grade level, Unfinished Learning provides additional academic foundation support with the goal in mind that students can perform well at grade level- they just have unfinished learning.

Current student demographic is K-8th. Monday –Friday 2hrs a day.

MATH: It’s the goal of the program is to ensure that students understand mathematical concepts, problem solving procedures and thinking, as well as language, models, pictures and/or diagrams, to explain their thinking. The approach used when students face difficulty with homework (or in other things) is to question their thinking and knowledge, and to lead them to and understanding of concepts, procedures and language so they can continue with their work independently. Any weaknesses in these areas are noted and used as one of the basis’ for developing additional support. Students are given ample practice to develop long-term memory and understanding. It is also necessary to teach students (or to review with them) multiply ways to solve problems as well as the standard algorithms (steps to solving a problem- which do not promote understanding of concepts)

LITERACY: Being good readers is essential for student's success, now and in the future. The literacy goal is for students to be able to fluently decode and understand grade-level text (reading) across genres. Students should be able to express their understanding by discussing text, writing coherent and grammatically correct responses to questions, and being able to synthesize information read.

Learning to read efficiently follows a sequence that starts with the alphabetic principle. That principle is that the sounds within spoken words are represented in writing by letters, and that those letters represent sounds rather than consistently. Next is phonemic awareness. It is an individual’s understanding of the individual phonemes in a word (a phoneme is the smallest speech sound into which a spoken word can be divided). Phonemic awareness between assists students learning to decode phonics. Phonics is the relationship between speech and print. English has 26 letters that represent 43 different sounds. Students need to be able to decode fluently so they can attend to comprehension. In order to comprehend well, students need to know the meaning of lots of words (vocabulary) and how to deal with the ideas in text.

With all the above considerations, Unfinished Learning provides other instructional activities and resources in addition to what may be addressed in Homework. This is often done within grade level- groups. Small groups and/or individual instruction.

When students have no homework, they are provided with an assignment sheet. Everyone has a personal “box” where the assignments and other activities are put in as a replacement, that can be completed usually over a week or two weeks' time. Students have access to Scholastic Magazines that cover current events, math, science and geography. Each magazine is accessible online and have videos that further enhance students’ content knowledge and vocabulary. Unfinished learning provides a plethora of activities to enhance students learning. Assignments and work are usually based on assessments, informal and formal, problems noted when assisting students with homework, and grade-level content and standards.
