What we aim to solve
The diagnosis that your child has cancer is one of the worst things a family can imagine. Unfortunately, studies show that while families are still reeling with this life-changing illness, about one-third of families are also thrust into financial stress due to the costs not only of healthcare, but from lost wages as a parent loses income to become a primary caretaker. This Star Won't Go Out is working to alleviate some of this cancer-related financial toxicity for families.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
STAR Grant
Financial grants up to $2000 are provided to qualified families to pay for cost-of-living expenses such as rent/mortgage, utilities, and travel costs.
Esther Day
When asked by John & Hank Green how to celebrate her August 3rd birthday each year, Esther declared it should be a day to celebrate love for family and friends by telling those who we are close to that we love them, even if it is sometimes difficult to say out loud. One of TSWGO's missions is spread the news about #EstherDay, a holiday with no national boundaries, and a day to let the people that we love KNOW that we love them!

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to lessen the financial stress of families facing childhood cancer in New England, helping to lighten their burden through the giving of financial grants and community involvement. Our intent is to be a source of strength and encouragement through giving funds to help pay for expenses not covered by insurance, including rent or mortgage payments, utilities, and travel costs.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
TSWGO accepts applications for financial help for cost-of-living expenses. Most of our applications are submitted to us by hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare professionals, although families can also apply directly. Applications are vetted and reviewed to ensure that eligibility guidelines are met and applications are complete. Each applicant is assessed by the family grant committee before funds are awarded to meet various needs, including housing, transportation, and utility expenses.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Each year resources are raised through donations, grants, and fundraising events including our annual Shine Under the Stars Gala. These funds are used to provide financial assistance throughout the year to applicant families. To date, This Star Won't Go Out has given out over $450,000 in support to families with a child or young adult diagnosed with cancer.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Founded in 2011, This Star Won't Go Out has made a difference for hundreds of families, and given out over $450,000 in support. We are shooting for reaching the half million mark by 2021, as we continue to help more children with cancer.
