What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy was founded in 2011 to revitalize and improve Untermyer Gardens, which had been called the most spectacular garden in America before suffering a long period of severe decline. It works in partnership with the City of Yonkers, which owns the garden, and has thus far completed the restoration of eight distinct garden areas. The Conservancy is dedicated to completing the restoration of the garden's historic architecture and garden areas while designing innovative new natural spaces and strengthening its commitment to ecological responsibility and community service.

Overview

The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy is dedicated to restoring and maintaining Untermyer Gardens and ensuring its future. Thus far, eight distinct garden areas have been restored, and plans are under way to develop seven more. The Conservancy raises funds to underwrite the garden’s operating and capital expenses; strategically plans, implements, and manages capital projects in the garden; creates a welcoming environment for visitors; delivers educational programs that amplify the garden’s architecture, horticulture, and history and encourage people to interact with the natural setting; provides paid internships that teach horticultural skills to local high school students; and promotes community engagement through volunteer opportunities and special events. The rare public garden that is open to the public free of charge, Untermyer Gardens welcomes more than 125,000 local, regional, and international visitors annually.
