Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Cardborigami aims to use design innovation to alleviate homelessness due to disaster or poverty. Our centerpiece product is a lightweight, temporary shelter constructed of folded, sustainably made cardboard that provides privacy and protection from the elements. We will begin our major impact by addressing the massive homelessness crisis in our home region of Los Angeles County, whose nearly 58,000 homeless population is the second highest in the nation. Of this number, only ~25% are accommodated in shelters. The lack of emergency housing is a particularly acute bottleneck preventing more homeless individuals from being connected with the wraparound services they need to transition off the streets. Traditional brick-and-mortar facilities simply cannot be built fast enough for the urgent need, leaving many to sleep uncovered wherever they can find space.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Temporary Shelters for Urban Homeless: #TRANSITIONME
Cardborigami's core product provides temporary, crisis housing for homeless transition-aged youth, individuals and families. We partner with local, multimodal services providers to extend their temporary housing capabilities for the clients they serve. Shelters are utilized solely in safe and monitored group environments.
Shelters for Disaster Relief & Preparedness
Cardborigami shelters can be deployed for temporary housing in the aftermath of natural disasters or other emergency aid situations, providing shelter to people who have been displaced from their homes. Neighborhood-level organizations, aid relief missions, NGOs as well as local governments can procure our product for emergency stockpile as well as following a disaster.
Temporary Work Experience for Young Adults: #YOUTHPLOYMENT
This is a program through which young adults who are in transitional or rehabilitation programs at partner organizations are engaged for temporary work to assemble and package the Cardborigami shelters. They are paid fixed hourly wages for the assembly assignment over a contracted, temporary duration (one to several months), and remain under the primary supervision of the partner organization. This experience is intended to provide a verifiable work record for those young adults in order to facilitate more permanent future employment.
