What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Edible Acre
In partnership with Evanston Township High School, The Talking Farm operates the Edible Acre, an in-school gardening program and orchard.
Orchard Village
The Talking Farm partners with Orchard Village, a community for developmentally-challenged persons, to cultivate an edible garden and help its constituents gain life skills.
FarmHand
The Talking Farm operates a paid certification program in which participants learn about urban agriculture by completing 50 hours of instruction in 6 different categories.
Howard Street Farm Internships
Interns accepted to work at the Howard Street Farm commit to a more intensive program on urban agriculture. Interns will participate in all the tasks associated with the daily operation of a diversified production vegetable farm. Interns will walk away with a solid understanding of crop planting, crop care, harvesting, hoop house management, disease / pest management and volunteer management.
Y.O.U.
The Talking Farm partners with Y.O.U. Evanston (Youth & Opportunity United) to operate F Cubed, a year-round horticulture- and environmental-focused after-school program for high school students, as well as teaching gardens at several local schools.
NSERVE
A multi-week summer school course, "Introduction to Environmental and Horticultural Careers," is taught at the Howard Street Farm to high school students from several local high schools and covers topics such as environmental issues, sustainability, farm management and planning, soil health, crop planning, organic agriculture, social justice issues regarding food, and how to help build and participate in a resilient food system and environment.
