Making Conservation Count
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
As the planet faces an unprecedented biodiversity crisis, it is imperative that solutions are developed on a scale commensurate with the challenge. Protected areas are widely acknowledged as central to those solutions, but approaches to protected area conservation are hindered by short-term, disconnected and under-funded project cycles. In consequence, the majority of the world’s protected areas, most of which are facing significant threats, suffer from inadequate and inconsistent management. As scientists and conservationists coalesce around the need for a coordinated global effort to increase protected land, it is essential that the current protected area network—the critical biodiversity banks on which these broader efforts depend—is secured long-term.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Gonarezhou Conservation Trust
The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust protects and conserves the wilderness, biodiversity, ecological processes, wild and scenic landscapes within Gonarezhou National Park and Malipati Safari Area boundaries. The Trust sustains the exceptional resource values of these areas for present and future generations, while supporting their role in the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area and regional economic development. The culture and history of the Shangani people are recognised as one of the key components of the park.
Purus-Manu Conservation Corridor, Peru
Manu is the most biodiverse national park in the world and FZS has been working in and around the park for more than 25 years. The main objective of this project is to safeguard biodiversity, indigenous territories and climate functions in the Amazon rainforest. We work in close partnership with Peru's state institutions responsible for the administration of protected areas.
Selous Conservation Project, Tanzania
The Selous Game Reserve in the Southeast of Tanzania is one of Africa’s largest protected areas and internationally recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Extending to about 50,000 square kilometres, larger than Switzerland, the Selous Game Reserve accounts for more than a fifth of Tanzania’s protected area network.
Since 2017, FZS-US has been an implementing and co-financing partner of the Tanzanian and German governments' joint ‘Selous Ecosystem Conservation and Development Program’ (SECAD). The objective is to strengthen the Selous Game Reserve management and protection.
North Luangwa Conservation Project, Zambia
The North Luangwa Conservation Programme (NLCP) is a partnership between the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Zambia Department of National Parks and Wildlife to conserve 22,000 km² of the North Luangwa ecosystem. Founded in 1986, the partnership focuses on protected area management and law enforcement.
Serengeti Conservation Project
The Serengeti Conservation Project is a partnership between the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the government of Tanzania that dates back to the late 1950s. FZS-US's goal is to provide critical financial support to the Project for resource protection, ecological and threat monitoring, and management in Serengeti National Park, one of the world's most iconic natural sites.
Bukit Tigapuluh Conservation Program, Indonesia
Bukit Tigapuluh is a novelty in Indonesian conservation. FZS-US strives to conserve this precious habitat which harbors Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran Tigers, Malayan Tapirs, and Sumatran Orangutans. The Indonesian rainforests are among the designated global megadiversity regions, but forest destruction on the different islands is extremely severe and occurring quickly. The Bukit Tigapuluh Project focuses on practical steps to preserve wildlife and habitats. FZS-US works to support the national park authorities in safeguarding the area. In addition, FZS-US focuses on community engagement through education and sustainable economic development projects for the ethnic groups who live in the national park forests.
Wilderness Conservation in the Carpathian Mountains
Frankfurt Zoological Society-US is partnering with Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) to protect forested land in the Southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania. This area consists largely of unfragmented forest and is home to thousands of plant and animal species, including wolves, bears, and lynx. Overhunting and logging are threatening many of these species. FZS and FCC are working to create a national park that will ensure the protection and continued survival of these species.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We work to protect biodiversity and wilderness around the globe for the benefit of current and future generations. Our flagship program is the Serengeti National Park, where we have been active for more than 50 years. Our trademark is boots-on-the-ground protected area management, and we work in close partnership with local communities and authorities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We concentrate on the most basic and essential elements needed to conserve protected areas. This includes training and equipping park rangers, providing vehicles and a workshop for maintenance, providing aerial surveillance and transportation, and working with communities around protected areas to provide conservation education and alternative livlihoods.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our ground-based partner is the Frankfurt Zoological Society, one of Europe's oldest and most respected conservation organizations with more than 50 years of experience around the world and a clear track record of achievement.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are proud of close relationships with partners and indicators of success such as stable elephant and rhino populations. We are challenged where partnerships are difficult to establish and maintain, chiefly where governance structures are weak or corruption is high.
