Keeping Families Close
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. But when a family is already facing significant medical bills, staying in a hotel is often something they simply can't afford. They are then faced with bleak options: sleeping in their car or staying in a cramped hospital room. That isn't ideal for a parent who needs their rest and doesn't work at all if there are siblings involved. Families end up split up, exhausted and stressed.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Ronald McDonald House of Greater Cincinnati provides a place for families to call home so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little to no cost. We offer a community of compassion, support and the comforts of home to families with critically ill children, steps away from the medical care they need.
Our House is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Cincinnati’s Ronald McDonald House keeps families close to each other and the medical care they need, when they need it most. We surround families with hope and support and bring joy and a sense of normalcy to children as they heal.
Our House cares for 177 families every night, including parents, children receiving outpatient treatment, siblings and other family members. By easing the financial and emotional burdens of caregivers and by taking care of important practical needs, our House allows parents to focus entirely on caring for their children. Outpatient children living at our House can enjoy activities, special events, and making friends with other kids who have a mask, a feeding tube or a bald head just like them.
Our House helps care for the entire family by offering:
A community of families who share the same hopes and concerns
Staff and volunteers who listen and help
Library and meditation room
Indoor and outdoor play areas
Exercise room, game room, arts and crafts room
Daily activities and tickets to local attractions
Computers and WiFi
Laundry facilities
On-site teachers
Comfortable private bedrooms and bathrooms
Home-cooked meals
Free massages and haircuts
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati has been supporting families from around the world for nearly 40 years. To date, we have welcomed more than 37,000 families into our Home. While we are grateful for the support of Cincinnati Children's and McDonald's, we rely on the the generosity of our individual donors, foundations and grants for approximately 90% of our funding each year.
In 2017, we received our second Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics from the Better Business Bureau of Greater Cincinnati. We are the only nonprofit in Greater Cincinnati to win the award twice.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
For more than a decade, our House was full every night of the year and we always had a wait list. Turning a family away is the hardest part of the work that we do and it's something that we'd like to not have to do again. With the support of our global RMHC team, our board of directors, Cincinnati Children's and our generous supporters, we recently opened a 99-room expansion. Our 177 bedroom House is the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world.
