Connecting People and Communities

What we aim to solve
Production Services Unlimited, Inc. (PSU) is working to support and assist people with disabilities to become valued and respected members of their communities. People with disabilities have historically experienced segregation and isolation, as well as financial and social inequity. Social and vocational opportunities are often limited or unavailable to them. Implicit bias and stereotypical attitudes regarding people with disabilities are held by many in society and effect their access to employment and meaningful relationships. The disability services industry often perpetuates these biases and impedes people with disabilities from developing social capital, obtaining purposeful and profitable employment, and maintains segregation. The lack of meaningful connections, outside of paid providers, increases the risks of abuse, neglect, and mental and physical illnesses.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Employment Services
PSU employment staff provide services, through both Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, to assist individuals with obtaining and maintaining employment in their community. Our employment staff are Certified Employment Support Professionals (CESP) that work with individuals and teams to identify employment interest, define employment parameters, and assist with locating and negotiating with employers.
Vocational Habilitation Services
Our Work Center is a training facility that allows employees to develop job skills and soft skills needed for community employment while earning a paycheck. PSU holds many contracts with local and international businesses to provide steady work and income source.
Adult Day Services
Through our A.I.M. program, we offer a variety of opportunities for people to share places and experiences in their neighborhoods. Everyone can choose to volunteer, explore and engage in their community. PSU partners with private citizens and organizations to give people a chance to meet and connect with others through classes, social events, fitness activities and volunteering. PSU additionally offers on-site activities to broaden and enrich individuals’ interests and talents and to enhance their social skills, financial responsibility, and life skills.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
PSU aspires to support people with disabilities while helping them establish relationships and connect with their community. Our aim is to create more opportunities for the people we serve by opening more pathways to competitive, integrated employment and helping them form more meaningful relationships.
Offering support and assistance in increasing the vocational and social opportunities will lead to equality while influencing and educating any biases. Our support will also reveal the possibilities to people with disabilities while they engage in defining their dreams and their futures. Creating space and probabilities for people with disabilities will empower them to self-advocate and exercise their independence.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
PSU offers comprehensive employment services from evaluating interests and employment skills to pursuing and retaining competitive, integrated employment. We provide employment services through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. Our established business partners give greater opportunities and advantages to the individuals we serve. Our employment staff offer support for every step of the employment journey.
Our A.I.M. (Adult Integration in Motion) program supports individuals while engaging in their interests and their communities. We give people a chance to share places and experiences through volunteering, classes, social events and fitness activities while fostering meaningful connections and relationships.
PSU has developed many community and business partners that increase the opportunities for individuals to make both vocational and social connections.
PSU strives to educate individuals, teams, families and other support agencies for them to consider greater possibilities and expectations. Our community involvement and outreach programs also aim to influence community perceptions and increase the opportunities available for integration and connections.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
PSU has been in business for over 40 years though we have evolved and broadened the scope of our services over the years. PSU employs over 30 staff members and over 50% of them have 10 years or more of experience. We have continued our staff education and vision through various grants, partnering with other agencies and scheduled inservice days. PSU has added staff and restructured the Table of Organization to transform our service provision and keep ahead of industry trends.
PSU has long established relationships with local businesses through contractual agreements that provide long term and stable work opportunities to the individuals we serve. This also contributes to a diverse revenue stream and lessens our dependency on Medicaid reimbursements. PSU has partnered with several other non-profits and community agencies on projects, volunteer opportunities, various class offerings and other community events and activities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We were awarded and completed a Grant from Starfire Council to train staff and complete community inclusion projects with 20 individuals. We are currently working with a Subject Matter Expert on an Employer Transformation Grant from Ohio DODD. The project will be completed later in 2021. We are working on obtaining CARF accreditation for employment services which will allow us to expand our employment services. While some of our goals were sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought new rules and regulations, we changed the way we provide and offer services to continue to support as many individuals as possible. We look forward to being able to more fully and actively engage in the community when it is safe to do so again.
