What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Health problems including heart disease, stress, obesity, social isolation, and many more can lead to expensive medical treatments, an unhappy life, and an early death. Regular exercise has been shown to be critical in reducing these problems. Swimming has long been recognized as one of the best forms of exercise because of its high-aerobic and low-impact nature. USMS provides opportunities for its members to swim for their physical and mental health, and this leads to a healthier lifestyle, complete with supportive and friendly social groups in their communities. In addition, about one third of adults in the United States can’t swim the length of a pool, which puts them at risk for being one of the eight to 10 people who drown every day in the US. USMS finds this unacceptable and it has the experience and resources to help adults become safer around water.

Five powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?

Our vision is to be the premier resource for adult aquatic fitness in the United States and to make fitness through swimming available for as many adults as possible. Simply put, we’d like to help adults in the US lead happier, healthier lives, and we believe regular swimming for fitness or competition can do that. This includes both reducing the number of adult drownings by providing learn-to-swim opportunities, and encouraging the next generation of Masters swimmers by supporting college club swimmers.

Through our five program areas, (Membership Services, Education Services, Swimming Saves Lives, Events, and College Club Swimming) continue to enhance, customize, and deliver value based on the needs and interests of our members and potential members. This includes simplifying our branding and marketing to clearly communicate the essence of USMS, as well as transforming our offerings to align with the changing environment and encouraging the next generation of members and volunteers. We also seek to engage and activate partnerships with organizations that align with our mission, vision, and values, for the purpose of increasing benefits to our members, enhancing and expanding the USMS brand, and improving access to swimming lessons and facilities.

USMS has a network of thousands of dedicated volunteers across the country who have governed USMS since 1970. Membership services are created and delivered by a 20-member professional staff in Sarasota, Fla. USMS also has more than 3300 certified Masters coaches and 1300 certified adult learn-to-swim instructors in 2250 clubs and programs serving members and potential members across the country. Our members donate both money and time in our Swimming Saves Lives programs to provide learn-to-swim opportunities for adults in communities nationwide.

We know through membership growth, membership renewal, event participation, education outreach, public relations efforts, and member and volunteer feedback. We track statistics and solicit and implement feedback regularly. In addition to hard numbers, year after year our members—both former competitors and brand-new swimmers—tell us that joining their local USMS clubs and swimming regularly or learning to swim has effected dramatic positive change in their lives, and in some cases saved their lives.

We’ve grown from a few thousand members in 1970 to more than 60,000 today. Since 2010 we’ve certified 3300 Masters coaches and 1300 adult learn-to-swim instructors. Thousands of people have had the opportunity to learn to swim. Since 2017 we’ve provided support for 4,500 college club swimmers to pursue their passion for swimming while attending school. We’ve seen a steady increase in event participation over the past five decades. This year we launched a fitness event series and we’re tracking participation. Our marquee competitive event, Spring Nationals, had the most competitors it’s ever had this year. Our events are all-inclusive and all members, regardless of speed or experience, have the opportunity to compete or swim for fitness. Future goals include creating swimmer and coach clinics to educate and engage members, modernizing our IT platforms to welcome new members and enhance member experience, and finding the right partners and platform to amplify our messaging.
