What we aim to solve
Every day women choose to terminate their pregnancies because they believe a baby will ruin their life. They believe if a pregnancy and a child are unplanned, they are incompatible with a happy, successful life. They are told by friends, boyfriends, families and husbands that they can’t have a child and fulfill their dreams. They are told they can’t do it. They may believe they are too busy, too poor, too dumb, too complicated to be a mother, so they have abortions. In Franklin county, more than 3,000 babies are aborted every year. Most of these women, often unknowingly, suffer from Post Abortion Stress (PAS). Post-abortive women may experience PAS in the form of one or more of the following mental health issues: depression, anxiety, flashbacks, suicidal thoughts, unexplained anger, social isolation and addiction.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Crisis pregnancy intervention
Since its inception in 1981, PDHC has provided abortion prevention services and promoted childbirth. At-risk women have been offered an ultrasound to promote childbirth through educating individuals on the development of the baby. Ultrasounds are also used to confirm viability of the pregnancy and provide an accurate gestational date.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Pregnancy Decision Health Centers (PDHC) changes and saves lives by preventing abortions through Crisis Intervention, Youth Development, Extension and Recovery programs. PDHC empowers individuals to make healthy life choices consistent with the God-given intrinsic value of every human life.
Every woman should have the support she needs for a healthy pregnancy and baby. No one should feel that abortion is her only option. 71% of the women we serve have an annual income of less than $15,000. 76% are single, 57% are ages 20-29 and 63% are minorities.
Our goal is to provide crisis intervention and parenting support to 20,000 women and families in 2022-2023. This is 1,000 more families than in the previous two years.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We will reach more women at-risk for abortion through mobile marketing that directs them to pdhc.org and our 24-hour hotline. Women and families can schedule appointments online or by calling or texting the hotline. They come to our centers for free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and consultations.
The care PDHC offers goes beyond an immediate crisis. Nurses educate parents about prenatal care and provide prenatal vitamins to support healthy moms and babies. PDHC provides free parenting classes, maternity and baby items.
As a preventative strategy, PDHC’s well-respected and sought-after youth program teaches teens to make healthy life choices, set goals, and know their own value. This leads most teens to decide to wait until marriage for sexual activity.
For those women and men who have sadly chosen abortion and are suffering, PDHC’s Abortion Recovery (aR) program guides people through healing. It’s a safe space for recovery through support groups, classes and weekend retreats.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
PDHC serves women and families at four centers strategically located around Columbus. Women receive one-on-one consultations with a PDHC nurse or trained volunteer who listens to their stories and concerns. We talk women through their options. We confirm their pregnancies and offer ultrasounds. 80% of women who see or hear their babies’ heartbeats during ultrasounds choose life. We help every woman with practical support, accurate information and education about what resources are available to help them. PDHC is dedicated to serving the whole person – body, mind and soul. Staff and volunteers take time to really get to know the client and provide continuity of care.
We provide education for parents on practical ways to manage a new or growing family. PDHC clients receive vital education in Safe Sleep, Newborn Care, Healthy Lifestyle, Car Seat Safety and other important topics. We offer fatherhood classes that focus responsibility of fathers and promote two-parent families.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
PDHC has protected life and compassionately cared for women and families in central Ohio since 1981. Annually PDHC serves over 12,000 people in addition to over 40,000 calls, texts and online chats. Our 2018-2019 initiatives are:
Increasing client visits – PDHC will serve to 6,000 women and families in our centers through, targeted marketing campaigns and community outreach.
Student mentoring – Youth with mentors are 63% more likely to reduce high-risk behaviors like sexual activity, violent tendencies and substance abuse. PDHC mentors will meet with youth in school once per week and off campus once a month. Corporate sponsors and individuals who are interested in youth development will be invited to invest in this program.
Fatherhood project – As a support to new dads and families, PDHC will add four in-depth workshops for 40 expecting and new dads to promote healthy two-parent families, the benefits of monogamy and the importance of a man’s role as husband and father.
