What we aim to solve
There is a growing national achievement gap between students with families who have significant financial resources and those who do not. In our own community of York, we face persistent challenges in educating students living in or near the federal poverty line. The York City School District has one of the State’s highest student abject poverty rates, and despite commendable efforts at reform, remains one of the lowest-performing districts in the state. The community is struggling to build a pipeline out of poverty. Time is of the essence for York’s students and the current educational pipeline is inadequate to equip them to thrive economically, relationally, and spiritually.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
K-12 Education
Logos Academy is a private K-12 school in York, PA, accredited by the Middle States Association, and registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Since its founding in 1998, Logos has built a tradition of providing an excellent education that is affordable for all families in York, reserving two-thirds of classroom seats for students who live below or near the federal poverty line. In the 2018-19 academic year, the full per student tuition rate was $9,270, but due to the generosity of our local community, the average student paid $1,966 to attend Logos Academy. Last year, 99% of our students received tuition assistance. Founded in 1998 with 14 kindergarten and first-grade students, Logos has grown to over 270 students. Logos provides an ideal learning environment in small class sizes through the following five core values: Christ-centered, culturally diverse, community minded, classically trained, and collaborative family partnerships

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We believe that all students should have access to a high-quality education regardless of their family’s income or the neighborhood they live in. Students should have the opportunity to attain their God-given purpose of a life full meaning and productivity for the good of their family and community.
Since our founding in 1998, Logos Academy has been providing our K-12 students with an outstanding Christ-centered education, made possible by generous scholarships. Often, private schools serve the elite members of the community and sometimes are exclusive to one faith group. Logos Academy does exactly the opposite. Our students come from a variety of faith backgrounds. A full two-thirds of our students live at or below poverty and the average student receives $7,472 in scholarship funding, bringing their tuition to $1,800. >Every family pays something proportional to their income and family size. We address the needs of our students by training trauma-informed teachers, requiring strong parent partnerships, and by keeping our class sizes intentionally small. Our students gain access into a vibrant learning community that focuses on high-quality academics in the context of human formation. We want our students to be leaders who capably serve their communities with skill and character.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Since our founding in 1998, Logos Academy has built a tradition of providing an excellent education that is affordable for all families in York, reserving two-thirds of classroom seats for students who live below or near the federal poverty line. We provide an ideal learning environment in small class sizes through the following five core values. We believe that an education shaped by the following 5 core values produces students of intelligence plus character, who graduate to be leaders in their community.
CHRIST-CENTERED
We seek to know Jesus, be led by His Word and Spirit, and be shaped by the Gospel. We recognize Jesus as the King of all creation. This reality gives meaning and purpose to everything we do. We commit ourselves to showing respect (for God, people, education, and creation), taking responsibility, and seeking to repair the brokenness in our lives and in our world.
CULTURALLY DIVERSE
We recognize and celebrate diversity as a gift from God and a demonstration of God’s love for us. We value diversity in our students, families, staff, and city. God has brought us together from various cultural, socioeconomic, denominational, and educational backgrounds. Divided, we all become weakened and impoverished. Together, we are empowered and enriched, building bridges of brotherhood through the love of Christ.
COMMUNITY MINDED
We foster intentional community between our students, families, and staff. Logos Academy also strives to be a good neighbor to our broader community. Jesus commands us to love our neighbors and to seek the peace and prosperity of our city.
CLASSICALLY EDUCATED
We cultivate students in the Classical tradition of education to become people of wisdom, grace, and virtue in service to God’s Kingdom. This time-tested approach to human formation fosters students who are effective communicators and creative, critical thinkers. As students develop a biblical worldview, they learn to love truth, beauty, and goodness.
COLLABORATIVE FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS
We believe that a participatory family is critical to what we do during the school day. Parents and families are an essential part of the Logos Academy community, and we value each person’s involvement.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our commitment to excellence has been recognized by accreditation through the Middle States Association. We received a glowing recommendation from the accreditation review panel: “You have an extraordinarily effective program here at Logos. We heard testimony countless times from students, parents, and staff at all levels asserting that Logos Academy changes people for the better, not only as learners, but also as confident young people who are influenced by a Christ-centered program...Many schools claim to change lives; clearly Logos does change lives.”
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our young people need an excellent educational pipeline that carries them from their earliest stages of development into successful careers and meaningful service in the community. For 20 years, Logos Academy has been working to build such a pipeline. We have grown from a single class of 14 students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade to a school that now serves over 270 students in grades k-12. Though much has changed since we first opened our doors, we have stayed true to our mission of providing an excellent education, grounded in the love of Christ, to students regardless of their family’s income. Every family contributes tuition appropriate to their income and generous donors give to cover the remaining cost to educate. Together we are helping students succeed!
As we plan for the future of Logos Academy, we believe we can bring together top quality instruction, a powerful business network, and the necessary structures to provide a unique high school experience that provides our students top-notch career preparation. Our emerging workforce integration model will focus on human formation, life skills development, workforce apprenticeships, and career coaching.
