What we aim to solve
IMPROVING THE SAFETY, QUALITY, AND AFFORDABILITY OF HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Leapfrog Group
A program known for its national Hospital Safety Grades, is represented in New Jersey by the Quality Institute. As a result of the Quality Institute's work, New Jersey consistently has one of the highest hospital participation rates for the Leapfrog Hospital Survey-providing current, relevant information so employers and consumers can advocate for improved health care quality, safety, and transparency
The Mayors Wellness Campaign
This program is active in more than 380 municipalities, giving mayors tools and strategies to champion healthy living in their communities. It began in 2006 in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities. More recently, we added a new program to help communities engage in thoughtful dialogue about advance care planning-The Conversation of Your Life-supported by The Horizon Foundation of New Jersey
Conversation of Your Life (COYL)
A MWC program that aims to improve end-of-life care planning from a community and cultural perspective. COYL provides community leaders and local partners with tools to engage community conversations around advance care planning. Generously supported by The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, COYL works through local volunteer task forces and is active in 15 counties: Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset, and Union Counties. For the upcoming year, COYL is focused on expanding to Hispanic and Veteran communities.
Integrated Care for Kids (InCK)
It is a project through the MPC. We are a co-lead (sub-recipient) on the InCK project, which is creating a comprehensive approach to improving holistic health outcomes and functional status for children receiving Medicaid and CHIP. The project is being piloted in Monmouth and Ocean Counties with the 120,000 Medicaid recipients under age 21. The Quality Institute is focused on the design and implementation of an alternative payment model (APM) for the State Medicaid Agency to support the administration of the InCK model.
Maternity Action Plan (MAP)
The MAP serves as a companion to the NurtureNJ strategic plan. It includes background information and specific steps to improve maternal care and address disparities in maternal infant health outcomes especially for Black pregnant individuals and their families. This work is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Maternal Infant Health (MIH)
Maternal Infant Health (MIH) Hub: The MIH advances recommendations from Delivering Better Care: MIdwifery Practice in New Jersey to support Midwifery practice in New Jersey. The MIH Hub is an ongoing learning collaborative and compliments our MAP work. This work is supported by The Burke Foundation
Primary Care Payment Model Study
The Quality Institute was selected with funding from the New Jersey Department of Human Services to conduct a market scan of alternative payment models and value-based models for primary care currently in use in New Jersey to convene a workgroup of various stakeholders and experts to suggest models and measures to use to promote sustainable, comprehensive primary care with a particular focus on integrating behavioral health
Small Group Market Reform
At the Quality Institute we have long studied the individual and small group markets and looked for ways to make them more affordable. With input from consumers, busnesses, insurance and health policy experts, we created a report with nine recommendations to strengthen these markets for employers and their employees. Our recommendations are being used to develop policy changes in these regulated markets.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We strive to set a national example of better ways to improve quality and reduce costs of health care. At the Quality Institute, we promote quality improvement by working with our members, policymakers, grant funders, local leaders, and other stakeholders. To achieve our mission, we research and develop policies, provide educational opportunities, and actively partner with local health care champions to improve community health. Take a look at our work and join us in improving the safety, quality, and affordability of health care for everyone in New Jersey.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Quality Institute has always been an advocate for patient safety and health care quality. That, coupled with our objective, data-driven research and our ability to bring all parties together to resolve difficult issues, has led to numerous policy improvements. The result is increased transparency, better quality of care, and reduced costs and medical errors.
At the Quality Institute, we believe that collaboration is essential to improving our health care system. That’s why we bring providers, payers, patients and decision makers together to advance health care safety, quality and affordability. We’re the only independent, nonpartisan advocate working in New Jersey to promote accountability and transparency. We have more than 100 unique member organizations— all committed to improving health care for everyone in New Jersey.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We will be working on a perinatal care during COVID-19 report of recommendations
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
There has been an increase of 71% of NJ towns that have joined the Mayors Wellness Campaign. Over half of the 24 recommendations from the Medicaid 2.0 Blueprint have been addressed in whole or part since we released the Blueprint in March 2017. We have created 4 new MWC Tools for a total of 26 tools to assist municipalities in offering healthy programming. The Conversation of Your Life (COYL) program has expanded to more counties in New Jersey bringing it to a total of 11 counties where COYL task forces are in place
Working with NJII, we will expand the value of the NJ Health Information Network (HIN), the platform for electronic exchange of patient data across different health care providers
