Tug Pegasus Preservation Project

Jersey City, NJ   |  www.tugpegasus.org

Mission

The mission of Tug Pegasus Preservation Project is two-pronged: to preserve a piece of the history of our city's maritime heritage and to provide a dramatic, effective educational platform. Built in 1907, Pegasus survives as an example of ship construction as it advanced from one technology to another. This living example of history is available for public to see, study and enjoy. We are packaging education in an artifact. Together with executive director Hepburn and the Project?s nine-member board of directors share a fundamental premise: that learning about the waterfront through hands-on experience can enrich the lives of New York City kids. For many years, access to boats and the waterfront has not been part of urban culture. With Project Underway completed, students will have an educational platform that will add a challenging and a stirring dimension to their urban experience.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

This year our programs are a ramped up version of the programs that we initiated in 2002 . Working with the Police Athletic League of New York?s (younger kids. While some of the work with teens was aboard the Pegasus, pre-restoration, at that time and the following 2 years, we recruited the fireboat John J. Harvey to accommodate the underway/on board component of the program. This year we will have a class room component aboard the historic steam ship Lilac, a retired USCG tender and 2 vessels the Harvey and the Pegasus on the water. This year we will have docent training of our Teens with Manhattan and the Harbor School in Bushwick Brooklyn. Our campers, an anticipated 800-100 youths will be recuited by Friends of Hudson River Park, sponsor of the program. In August we will be joining the fireboat John J. Harvey, barge Lehigh Valley #79, and tug New York Central #13, on the ?blue links? Hudson River trip- a program of the Metropolitan Waterfront Allience - a 10 day cruise to Albany and back that offers public history tours in towns along the way, reviving interest in the great Hudson River.
