Mission

The Athabascan Fiddlers Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organized in 2001 for sharing, perpetuating, and preserving Athabascan culture, traditions, and values. We fulfill our mission via public outreach, hosting community events, and broadcasting culturally relevant programming.

In 2014, the Athabascan Fiddlers Association launched the Voice of Denali, KRFF 89.1FM, transitioning our outreach efforts from event based to daily contact. We broadcast through out Alaska's Interior via radio and stream Nationwide via the web.

Within Alaska's Interior, Athabascan culture stretches over thousands of miles of river, heavily timbered valleys, forested hills, mountain peaks - 175,000-square miles of landscape - slightly larger than California. It is home to 42 villages, it is the origin of at least 9 Alaska Native Indigenous languages, and is rich with cultural narratives that are vital to the people of this region.

November 2016, we celebrated our 34th year of hosting the Athabascan Fiddlers Festival, a celebration of Athabascan music, culture, and traditions. The Festival features more than 80 performers who traveled to Fairbanks to play their music, share traditions, and of course, dance.

Alaska's Indigenous societies have always been built on stories, songs, and knowledge that can only be learned by occupying this vast landscape over time. We are grateful for every opportunity to see elders and longtime fiddlers and excited by the emerging young musicians who come to perform, but travel is often prohibitive for many of our most rural community members. While we come and go from these communities by boat, snow machine, or small plane, but we connect by radio!

Alaska Native Phrase of the Day

In 2015, the Voice of Denali, KRFF 89.1FM introduced “Alaska Native Phrase of the Day” as a call-in-segment to our morning drive-time programming. Daily, we present a concept in English and asks listeners throughout the region to call-in and share how that word or phrase is spoken in their heritage language.
As of this writing, we have 500 words or phrases each spoken by fluent and semi-fluent speakers in each of the nine Indigenous and endangered languages of the Doyon Region – all digitally recorded.
