What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Animal shelters in Kern County require a lot of support, equipment, deal with rising costs and external pressures. We believe shelters shouldn’t have to worry about the funding of their organization. Since 2005, Friends Foundation has and continues to serve Kern County animal shelters in directly funding their needs so they can get back to doing their great work.

KRV Snip & Tip Trap, Neuter and Release Program for Community/Feral Cats

As of our third anniversary, September 2018, the Snip and Tip Program had completed approximately 1260 trap, neuter and release surgeries on the roaming/feral cats in the Kern River Valley.
This was accomplished with the help of the Simi Valley Spay and Neuter Mobile Veterinary Clinic, Critters Without Litters in Bakersfield, Kern Humane Society, local fundraisers and donations. Snip & Tip also received grants from the Bakersfield Californian and Virginia and Alfred Harrell Foundation for $14,000 and emergency funds from the Friends Foundation when needed. This was accomplished by 25+ dedicated and hard working volunteers.
Currently, the organizer of this program has relocated out of state, although she is still a member of the Friends Foundation Board. Barbara is continuing to support the group long distance and investigating additional funding sources, as there are still hundreds of feral cats in the Kern River Valley, but we are close to reaaching them all.

Lacey is a small dog who was tortured and badly scarred by her owner. Her story prompted an outpouring of generous donations from all across the globe. Donations which remained unspent at the end of Lacey's treatment where then used to set up an Emergency Medical Fund. Lacey's Fund is used to assist animals who are seized by city or county authorities due to abuse or neglect, or for animals impounded into the shelter who need medical assistance beyond what the shelter could reasonably provide, and have a place to relocate (a foster home, rescue or adoption) after treatment.
* This program continues to operate currently(2019) as needed

This program started in 2018 and provides free adoptions of cats and dogs from our shelter system, for American Veterans, who have the appropriate documentation. Friend's Foundation supports this program by paying County fees and S/N costs before being adopted. Much of the funding for this program is raised through a GoFundMe account.

In the past few years Friends Foundation has supported local shelters by purchasing equipment such as washer/dryers, large industrial fans, parvo tubs, microchip readers and purchasing vaccines for distemper and influenza and parvo costing thousands of dollars for Kern County Animal Services. In addition to these tangibles considerable donations were made to the local Humane Societies during the various floods in the southern areas of our country.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Friends Foundation endeavors to create a no-kill community through low cost spay and neuter efforts, increasing adoptions, improving pet owner responsibility, and expanding resources. We strive for a stellar community profile, and pet friendly shelter environments.

Community outreach through neighborhood events and educational opportunities to bring awareness to the over-population of unwanted/unplanned animals in our communities and to activities and projects Friends of K.C. Animals Shelters Foundation engages in.

Through fundraising events and donation Fiends of K.C. Animal Shelters Foundation is able to meet most of our locals shelters' requests as well as sponsor spay and neuter clinics in various neighborhoods. Through our partnerships with rescues in and outside kern County, we are able to pull our resources of volunteers and occasionally financial funds to meet our goals.

Though our local shelters are have a long way of reaching no-kill status, every year we remain in existence is another year we can support the work of our shelters and save another animal.

We continue to provide at least three spay/neuter clinics annually, spaying/neutering approximately 240 animals. We continue to provide funds to our local shelter to pay for emergency medical care for animals in their care. These two projects are our most costly endeavors.
