Del Amo Action Committee

WE NEVER GIVE UP!

aka Del Amo Action Committee   |   Rosamond, CA   |  [email protected]

Mission

We believe everyone deserves a healthy and safe community to live in. We believe policy changes that promote environmental justice will lead to healthier communities. The community formed the Del Amo Action Committee in 1994 to inform the neighborhood about their contaminated environment. The area adjacent to our community, located in unincorporated Los Angeles County, has been neglected for the last 50 years and used for industrial developments with no regard to nearby neighborhoods. . Most of the people residing in the area are of scarce resources, and have experienced language barriers. The neighborhood is comprised of blue-collar workers, immigrants, African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities who are established in the area, in some cases for generations.

Community Stormwater and Landuse Planning

Engaging our community though our youth leaders and core group members; we will identify the stakeholders needed to collaborate with the City and County Planners. We will then reach out to them, sharing our real life understanding of the environmental impacts bad landuse planning has on environmental justice neighborhoods. We will engage with new partners as well as with those we have successful working relationships with which have developed over the years in an effort to bring all the stakeholders together so we can begin collectively thinking about ways to move our community planning efforts forward. Some parts of our community are in Los Angeles City and the other part is in the unincorporated Los Angeles County.
They have not worked together, especially in areas like our where jurisdictions come together. We believe timing is right. On December 8, 2015 a motion by Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda Solis and Mark Ridley-Thomas on the ”Development and Implementation of Equitable Development Tools” was passed which included “The General Plan Update, which provides a blueprint for growth in the unincorporated areas in the next 20 years. The Board directed the Director of the Department of Regional Planning (DRP) to consult with experts, community groups, and other stakeholders to evaluate equitable development tools and concepts, and to report back with recommendations. The objective behind this effort was to identify strategies that could foster implementation of the General Plan in a manner that allows County residents at all income levels to benefit from growth and development, encourages the preservation and production of safe and affordable housing, and reduces neighborhood health disparities”.
