What we aim to solve
The Borrego Springs School District was the lowest performing district in San Diego County on the 2022 state exams for English language arts and math; dropping 15 percent from 2019 English performance and 8 percent from 2019 math. Administrators and teachers struggle to close this learning gap, but the challenges are great and have been made greater by two years of the Covid pandemic. Borrego Springs is recognized as a Severely Disadvantaged Community by the State of California. Students who are struggling and all too often failing academically need help. Learning Academy is designed to provide help at known critical junctures; junctures which have been identified by significant research. Children who are not reading at grade level at the end of 3rd grade get further behind in subsequent grades and are at high risk of dropping out of school, and the same is true for math in middle school. Post Covid research has also identified summer study as a proven method to earn back Covid losses.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Awarding Educational Scholarships
- High-School Learners Intervention: Scholarships to go to school
- Adult Learners Intervention: Scholarships to stay in school
BASIC accepts applications from graduating high school students and recent graduates to continue their education at 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, and vocational institutions. We also accept applications from adult members of our community who wish to return to school to further their careers. The primary criteria we use to evaluate our applicants are financial need (most come from large families with incomes less than $40,000/year), past academic success and the desire to accomplish his/her goals. The essays written by our applicants tell of the heartbreaking struggles they have had to remain in school and their hopes for the future. The BASIC Scholarship Committee, a group of community leaders each of whom has had a distinguished career in education, reviews each application.
Circle of Art Show and Sale
Sponsor and present the annual Circle of Art Show and Sale in March on Christmas Circle, Borrego Springs as the major fund raising vehicle for BASIC. Annually 70 artists and crafts persons exhibit their creations in an outdoor weekend show and sale. A festival of fine art, food, and music all presented by volunteers.
Learning Academy
Learning Academy is a 4-week summer intensive program designed to significantly increase specific skills of struggling learners at critical junctions in their education journey. It is a voluntary 20 day intensive summer reading program: 7 hours per day; maximum of 10 students per class; 1 certified teacher and 1 learning aid for each class. Classes meet in small venues that are not part of the school system. Children are made to feel they are participating in something special and the program includes learning opportunities that the children may not otherwise be able to experience. Now in its third year, Learning Academy has classes in three different disiplines: reading/literacy for 2nd and 3rd graders who are not reading at grade level; English Language Learners intensive for middle and high schoolers who need assistance to achieve English language fluency; and math for middle schoolers who are not proficient. Outcomes are measured and reported in the annual Report Card.
Books for Pre-schoolers
BASIC is now sponsoring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for children who reside in the Borrego Springs Unified School District. Enrolled children receive a free gift of an age-appropriate book monthly in their home from birth until age five. All their parents have to do is to make sure their children are read to.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
BASIC, which stands for Basic Assistance to Students in the Community, is an organization created by Borregans for Borregans with the goal of improving their lives through education. Through a focus on pinpointed areas where such improvements can be made, BASIC has created the C2G or Cradle to Graduation program, which focuses on the 3 main targeted age groups and areas of study during these crucial periods. This includes early reading for students age 1-5 and second and third graders, middle school math and English, and scholarships. Programs include Dolly Parton Imagination Library, early childhood education, and summer Learning Academy which consists of 4 focused areas of study in math, reading, writing, and English language development. Finally, our scholarship program serves to benefit those pursuing college, university, or trade education. Our aim is to have well-rounded students from cradle to graduation, and in turn, have a happier healthier community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Learning Academy is a summer 4 week, intensive education program offering over 100 hours of instruction to underachieving mainly Latinx Borrego students to move toward grade level proficiency. - reading at 3rd grade; math at 5th grade: and math at 8th grade. Two additional classes, one in English language fluency and the other a writing class, are offered for middle/high schoolers to increase English language capacity. A trained teacher and instructional aide lead each of the small classes (12 students/class). Testing data and best teaching practices are used to individualize instruction. Students are given the opportunity to shine in a small group setting while increasing skills and developing a love of learning. The relationships built between teachers and students is also invaluable. Relationships undergird successful teaching. The Learning Academy environment builds trust, affection, and understanding and skills.
