Forever Balboa Park
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Help fill the gap between what the City of San Diego can provide Balboa Park and what it needs to become a healthy, sustainable, inspiring urban park for all.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Park Improvement
Forever Balboa Park works in collaboration with the City of San Diego and various park organizations to restore, rehabilitate, and maintain many of the park's historic buildings, landscaping, gardens, and other structural and horticultural features. Recent projects include the restoration of the Balboa Park Carousel, Alcazar Garden, and Casa del Prado. A major project to restore the park's famed Botanical Building is currently underway.
Balboa Park Gardens
Forever Balboa Park works closely with the city's Parks and Recreation department to maintain, refresh, restore, and fundraise for the park's 18 historic public gardens. Through our volunteer Garden Stewards and Rose Garden corps, we actively assist the city in routine gardening tasks while educating visitors about horticulture and the gardens' history. Our Botanical Building Ambassadors and the free Gardens of Balboa Park guide we produce further informs and engages the public about the park's rich horticultural resources.
Visitor Experience
Our Balboa Park Visitors Center, located in the House of Hospitality, greets and orients 500,000 park visitors annually. A network of touchscreen information kiosks and satellite visitor information tents staffed by highly trained Park Ambassador volunteers extend our ability to welcome, inform, and assist visitors. Through an initiative to overhaul and improve the park's signage and wayfinding system, we are further enhancing park accessibility for all visitors.
Urban Forestry
With support from CAL FIRE and in partnership with the City of San Diego, Forever Balboa Park has helped renew the park's vital urban forest by planting more than 800 trees. Our arborist-trained volunteer Tree Stewards provide regular maintenance and monitoring of the new trees. They also participate in tree-planting events and demonstrations that educate students, park constituents, and the general public in the value of a healthy urban forest and its role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
Parkwide Volunteers
Forever Balboa Park's robust parkwide volunteer program provides many different ways to get involved and help the park, from enhancing the visitor experience to planting and caring for trees and gardens. The Points of Light Foundation renewed our Certified Service Enterprise status—placing the organization in the top 11% on nonprofits nationwide—in recognition of our commitment to leverage volunteer support for maximum mission impact. And for four straight years, our volunteer initiatives have greatly benefitted from the assistance of an AmeriCorps VIP Fellow.
Placemaking
As the City of San Diego's primary partner in activating Balboa Park's public spaces, Forever Balboa Park is currently developing new programing to draw and engage diverse audiences from all San Diego neighborhoods, in collaboration with many park and community partners. The goal of our new youth-oriented and arts-focused programing is to reach new audiences while helping to develop leadership qualities in the youth participants.
Public Spaces
In additional to hosting temporary events, Forever Balboa Park works with the city to improve public spaces for the benefit and enjoyment of all park visitors. After taking over management of the historic Balboa Park Carousel, we launched and completed a successful campaign to fully restore the iconic attraction and its companion Butterfly Ride, beloved by generations of families. We also worked with the city to create a viewing platform that protects and allows visitors to get up close to a 100+ year-old Moreton Bay fig tree, among the oldest and largest in the state.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. Build relationships both within and outside the park.
2. Add value to our community by creating a welcoming and accessible park space for EVERYONE.
3. Complete park rehabilitation, restoration, and enhancement projects with our partners and the city.
4. Deliver first-rate placemaking programs featuring a rich diversity of content, vendors, and performers.
5. Provide opportunities for youth to share their voices and develop as future leaders in the community.
6. Achieve organizational excellence in everything we do.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
• Foster next-level reciprocal relationships with the City of San Diego and our collaborators, focusing on deep, meaningful conversations about our shared concerns and potential solutions.
• Cultivate relationships with funders who care as much about Balboa Park as we do.
• Focus on transparency to ensure that our community feels a part of all that we do.

• Create a decision-making framework for assessing current and potential projects in relation to our vision and our resources.
• Complete projects currently underway that align with our vision and resources—on time and on budget.
• Assess and reconcile the needs for internal capacity building against projects and programs, creating a plan to align staffing needs with the operating budget and other resources and making the most of current funding by reallocating resources across the organization.
• Assess and reconcile the ability of our Board to meet the needs of our vision and incorporate this into Board-member succession planning.
• Assess and reconcile the ability of our volunteers to meet the needs of our vision and incorporate this into a volunteer-development plan.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our board and staff were part of the strategic planning process, so they are invested in the outcome. Additionally, together, the trustees and staff of the newly merged Forever Balboa Park organization have the skills and resources required to achieve the key objectives.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
• We have successfully come through the merger process of two park nonprofit organizations that share a similar vision and approach, to better serve our park and maximize our fundraising initiatives.
• We are actively engaged in a multi-million-dollar public works project and a capital campaign to restore the Botanical Building & Gardens, in partnership with the City of San Diego.
• We have completed major structural renovations on the historic Balboa Park Carousel.
• We have completed an organizational excellence exercise with our Board of Trustees, the implementation plan is set.
• We have launched multiple volunteer initiatives, including the Garden Stewards, Trail Stewards, and Tour Guides, to help improve the park experience for all visitors.
• We are engaging youth in a variety of development opportunities (internships, service days, creative activities).
