Orange County Women's Chorus
Causing treble since 1997
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We believe that music transforms our singers, our audiences, and our communities. We believe women's voices should be heard. We give women opportunities to demonstrate leadership, we commission works for women's voices, often from women composers, and we give experience and podium time to promising young women conductors who often struggle to gain that experience in a field still largely dominated by men.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Concert Programs
We offer three distinct concert programs annually, frequently with two performances for each program, in venues throughout Orange County, California. We adapted to online programs during the pandemic, and continue to adjust our programming in the current environment.
Conducting Internship
We offer an annual conducting internship to a promising young woman conductor, giving her an opportunity to work with a chorus outside a classroom setting, preparing warm ups as well as at least one piece for each program.
Commissioning
The OCWC commissions a new work for the treble repertoire at least every other year, frequently from a woman composer.
Touring
The Orange County Women's Chorus will tour domestically and internationally approximately every three years. While the direct costs of travel may be borne by the singers, the OCWC will incur production costs for the tour and provide financial assistance for those unable to travel without it.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We will commission a new work for women's voices at least once every two - three years.
We will continue to develop promising young women conductors through our conducting internship program.
We will perform at least one collaborative concert with another arts organization in the next two years.
We will plan and complete a tour in the next three years.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We commissioned a new work for virtual choir from Dale Trumbore for the 2020 - 2021 season, premiered a new work from Jocelyn Chambers in May 2022, and premiered a new work from Ruth Huber in June 2023.
We are seeking a new candidate for our internship program for 2023 - 2024, and will post the opportunity on local college campuses, including University of California-Irvine, California State University-Fullerton, and Chapman University, as well as online resources.
We collaborated with Men in Blaque to bring Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass to our community in May 2022.
We made our Carnegie Hall debut in June 2022, and our board is actively planning our next international tour with a goal of traveling to Croatia in 2024.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Orange County Women's Chorus is an auditioned, all-volunteer arts organization. Our board members are hard-working, talented, passionate. The OCWC is led by an artistic team and an executive team who work in partnership to achieve the organization's goals. We have a long history of meeting or exceeding our financial plans and our organizational objectives. Artistic Director Eliza Rubenstein has led the OCWC since 2000, emphasizing both the continued musical growth of the ensemble and the exploration of challenging and interesting treble repertoire. Eliza is the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities and Chair of the Music Department at Orange Coast College. She serves on the board of the California Choral Directors' Association as editor of Cantate. Sarah Hughes, Assistant Director, is a “graduate" of the OCWC's conducting internship program. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Arts in teaching from Chapman University.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have a long history of presenting outstanding choral literature. commissioning new works for women's voices, and preparing conducting interns for their careers in choral music. We have commissioned works from Kirke Mechem, Angel Lam, Dale Trumbore, Ruth Huber, and Joan Szymko, among others. Our conducting interns have continued their careers in music education and choral conducting, and one, Sarah Hughes, continues to work with the OCWC as our Assistant Director. We were named 2014 Outstanding Arts Organization by Arts Orange County. We were a prizewinner in the 2015 International Musical Eisteddfod (festival) in Llangollen, Wales. We completed our first international tour to the UK in 2015 and celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2018 with a tour to the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, Canada. We made our Carnegie Hall debut in 2022 with a set of some of our favorite works, and we joined a massed choir production of Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass under the baton of our own Eliza Rubenstein.
We believe our track record in the past is a good indicator of what we may accomplish in the future.

- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
