What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

South Africa has the biggest and most high-profile HIV epidemic in the world, with an estimated 7.2 million people living with HIV in 2017. South Africa accounts for a third of all new HIV infections in southern Africa. In the four countries where we operate with a total population of 118 million, there are 10.9 million people living with HIV, 409,000 new infections in 2017 and 174,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2017. The HIV prevalence rate in 2017 in our four target countries is 18.8% for South Africa, 13.3% for Zimbabwe, 11.5 for Zambia and 5.9% for Uganda. These statistics were taken from the Avert website https://www.avert.org/professionals/hiv-around-world/sub-saharan-africa On 26 December 2004 an earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that took the lives of 280,000 people. The number of deaths in our four target countries in 2017 is equivalent to the 2004 tsunami happening every 19 months.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Smart Choices

Smart Choices is a six-hour seminar created by CRU and is presented primarily to the youth ages 12-19. It address the fundamental issues about HIV/AIDS and other STIs. I also includes a presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a showing of the Jesus, also a product of CRU.

Population(s) Served

This program entails returning to schools and other institutions where the Smart Choices program has been taught and initiating small group bible studies with students who have made commitments to follow the Christian Faith.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To curb or halt the drastic spread of new HIV infection in the African countries that are most impacted by the AIDS pandemic.

Train and equip teams in the geographic areas where the AIDS pandemic is most prevalent to instruct children about HIV and how to protect themselves from becoming infected.

In 2007 Beacon of Hope established three full time teams in one city in South Africa, equipped to train students about HIV. Since 2007 we have expanded our operation to 14 teams operating in four countries.

We have expanded the Smart Choices program into a total of four countries so far, with fourteen teaching teams in eight geographic areas in four countries. These countries are South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Uganda. We also have the teams running more focused discipleship and character development classes in the schools that have been through the Smart Choices curriculum.

Our teams have trained 187,811 students since 2004 and over the past seven years they have averaged 24,000 students a year for the last seven years. Our teams are not fully utilized and with additional funding they could reach a lot more students with this life changing training.

The next major milestone that we are aiming for is to ween off one geographic area (three teams) from Beacon of Hope funding. This will enable us to expend into running the program in other countries or geographic areas within the existing countries or expand our community outreach introducing other programs like feeding programs.
