Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network

aka CPCRN   |   Mehoopany, PA   |  http://www.CairnRescue.com

Mission

CPCRN, founded in February 2001, rescues purebred Cairn Terriers and Cairn Terrier mixes found in animal shelters, released by their owners or otherwise. We also rescue purebred Cairns which are being used as breeding stock by puppy mills and backyard breeders. We provide ALL necessary medical care and rehabilitate and foster them; seek applications for and screen permanent homes for them; and adopt them to loving forever homes. We also have an education program. CPCRN is comprised entirely of volunteers. CPCRN maintains a website at http://www.CairnRescue.com where the public can report a Cairn in need, apply to foster or adopt a rescue Cairn and obtain information on responsible Cairn ownership and care.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

All dogs in CPCRN's rescue program are spayed/neutered, brought up to date on all shots, and provided any other necessary and appropriate veterinary care prior to being adopted. To identify Cairns in need of rescue, CPCRN volunteers monitor websites maintained by animal shelters throughout the country as well as internet discussion groups focused on Cairns and other companion animals. CPCRN then contacts the shelter or other organization having the Cairn in need and arranges for its pick-up and transport by volunteers in the area, finds a foster home for the Cairn to be temporarily homed and rehabilitated prior to placement, screens applications from potential adoptive families, checks their references, arranges for a home-visit by a CPCRN representative and if satisfactory, places the Cairn with that adoptive family.
CPCRN maintains a website at http://www.cairnrescue.com where it lists available Cairns in its program as well as Cairns available in other rescue groups' programs and in shelters to give them more exposure and thereby facilitate their adoption. The list of available Cairns is updated at least weekly. The website also allows potential adoptive families to submit an adoption application online and allows people who wish to volunteer to be foster homes to also submit their foster home application online. In addition, the site provides information to the public on responsible care and ownership of Cairns and provides links to other web-based resources that could prevent a family considering surrendering their Cairn due to the Cairn's health or behavioral problems from taking that stesupport groups for owners of blind dogs, wheelchairs for dogs who have lost mobility, and behavioral therapists for unruly dogs.
