Mission

Earth Care's mission is to educate and empower youth to create a thriving, just, and sustainable world. Our approach is based on the recognition that sustainability can only be achieved by linking issues of economics, social justice, and the environment with a multicultural awareness. We help to develop the capacity of young leaders to envision and create an abundant and sustainable world. These visionary leaders will make choices that will improve their relationship to the environment, one another, and ultimately the world.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Sustainability Courses:
Earth Care offers innovative and inspiring educators and courses on sustainability for secondary schools. Earth Care educators teach year-long courses at Public and Private schools in New Mexico. Through government, economics, environmental science, and other disciplines students learn about the connections between humans and the natural environment. They gain knowledge of appropriate technologies and help to "green" their schools. Our courses engage high school students in ways that get them excited about learning and school.

Youth Allies Leadership Training:
Created in 2006, Youth Allies for Sustainability is an out-of-school environmental leadership development program for young people (ages 13-19) who live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and surrounding Pueblos. Through Youth Allies, youth learn about themselves, develop greater ecological and cultural awareness, and connect to local efforts to restore the health of their community.

Sustainable Santa Fe- A Resource Guide:
The Sustainable Santa Fe Resource Guide is a 190 page annual magazine printed with natural ink on recycled paper, and is available to the public for free. 40,000 copies are distributed with the newspaper each November, and additional copies and are available throughout Santa Fe. This guide provides an opportunity for Santa Fe to become aware of and appreciate the resources we have available to us, existing community actions, and to envision a sustainable future for our growing community. In keeping with Earth Care's record of accomplishment of empowering teens, teenagers are selling advertising, developing the design, selecting and editing articles, interviewing community members, and identifying criteria used to evaluate organizations and businesses for sustainability.

Other Projects: Youth operated the One World Coffee and Trade store until 2006.
High school students learned entrepreneurial and business management skills while creating an environmentally and socially responsible business.

In partnership with the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club, the urban gardens project engages youth in community food security by establishing an organic garden to provide healthy snacks for the approximately 300 kids that frequent Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club.

Earth Care participants have presented in many peer education workshops and at conferences such as New Mexico Bioneers, the Quivira Conference, the Youth Providers' Summit, and the All Colors Youth Summit.
