Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
34 West strives to produce theatre of the highest calibre. We seek to employ professional actors, designers, technicians and producers. We aim to bring the Charleston community theatrical experiences that are unlike any other. We also aim to provide consistent and reliable employment for theatre artists.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
By focusing on original works, we strive to tell stories and create worlds that are unique to 34 West Theater. These stories are meticulously crafted by 34 West's actors and designers to bring life to characters never before seen.
We employ professional union, and non-union artists. Every artist is compensated at union-level wages. We carefully maintain a consistent budget for productions enabling these artist wages.
We actively seek out artists nationally and locally. We strive to find individuals who have a commitment to high artistic standards, and who are seeking to pursue theatre as a life-long profession.
We strive to maintain a family of artist-performers who care deeply for the work and audience base of 34 West, and bring them back into productions as frequently as possible.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
34 West has operated a season of productions yearly since 2001. 34 West has consistently expanded its audience reach. Within this expansion, performer salaries and production costs have also grown. 34 West aims to produce within its budgeted means. As the budget increases, 34 West will continue to expand its artistic team. Audience base has consistently grown since 34 West's inception. By actively cultivating and growing its audience base, 34 West is enabled to expand its budget.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
34 West has grown from being a touring company, operating seasons of shows at multiple venues throughout the US, to a permanent resident of Charleston, SC. Within this new permanent facility, 34 West has been challenged to establish a foot-hold within the expanding Charleston market. 34 West has consistently grown its audience of individual and season ticket holders. 34 West has established a loyal following for both its original programming, as well as an enlarging audience for the National Theatre of London broadcasts. These dual programs have proven to bring new audiences which eventually cross-support the programming.
In the future, 34 West is seeking to produce additional fully-developed, as well as workshopped programming from national and international artists. 34 West aims to produce, and provide an outlet for the production of, the best of independent theatre, locally, nationally and globally. 34 West aims to create multiple performance venues, allowing for the expansion of both fully-developed and workshopped programming.
