Program 1
DALLAS TEACHERS SPEAK: 159 Dallas ISD teachers were photographed for 18 x 24 posters, to be displayed across the City of Dallas, and with the purpose of uplifting the images and value of educators. For the posters, the teachers were asked: Why do I teach? and What do I need? The same 29 Pieces team that did the photography also did the post-production on the posters which means that the young artists who learned photography also learned Photoshop, photo editing and design skills. This same team, along with many volunteers, installed the poster exhibits. DALLAS STUDENTS SPEAK: 29 Pieces Founder and Executive Artistic Director Karen Blessen and professional artist Riley Holloway presented assemblies at Irma Rangel Young Womens Leadership School and Emmett J. Conrad High School as a kickoff to the Dallas Students Speak Project. More than 300 students participated in this project which served five purposes: 1. Teaching students the art of portraiture. 2. Encouraging students to give thought to a teacher whod had a positive impact on them. 3. Giving students the pride of seeing their art displayed in prominent locations in Dallas. 4. Communicating the value that students place on memorable teachers. 5. Reinforcing the message of Dallas Teachers Speak. LOVE PROJECT: Midland Odessa and Lubbock: The LOVE Project traveled to Midland Odessa and Lubbock, where teachers did the LOVE Project with students, receiving positive feedback as well as media coverage. Grand Prairie ISD: Judy Stone-Nunneley, Director of Visual Arts in Grand Prairie ISD, coordinated the LOVE Project for all schools in Grand Prairie. There were numerous public exhibits.
Program 2
PIECE 10 PROJECT: 29 Pieces did a series of workshops with students at the South Dallas Cultural Center, inspired by a passage from Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, titled Radiant is the World Soul. Souls Hidden a phrase from the passage was used as a point of departure to think about, and create art about those who have come before us and leave a legacy for us. We particularly focused on artists from the Harlem Renaissance and also on individuals whod played important roles in the history of the South Dallas Cultural Center. The students worked with professional artists Vicki Meek, Darryl Ratcliff, Diana Chase and Joe Stokes. The workshops resulted in collages and word phrases that then inspired the final art, which is a 9 ft. glass sculptural installation at the South Dallas Cultural Center. PIECE 24 PROJECT: A three-year project to broaden access, awareness and availability of the 29 Pieces: Artists Making a Kinder World curriculum, which has proven worth through usage by more than 80,000 students and 500 teachers.
