What we aim to solve
Roughly 40,000 adolescents are in juvenile justice facilities. Often suffering from trauma, academic failure, and diagnosable mental health issues, these youth must receive the opportunity to rebuild themselves. White's accepts referrals statewide. Over 400,000 children in the United States are in foster care. The opioid epidemic is pushing these numbers even higher. The need for well-trained and supported foster homes is great, as between 30 and 40 percent of foster parents drop out within the first two years. White's recruits, trains, and supports from six regions in the State of Indiana. According to the Annie E. Casey Kids Count data, Indiana is 28th in overall child well-being and 47th in child maltreatment. White's works with families to keep them intact. One in four girls falls into a clinical diagnosis -- depression, eating disorders, and other mental/emotional disorders. White's Compass Rose Academy is a safe haven for healing and empowerment.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Residential Services
Situated in Wabash on a 80-acre campus, White's residential program provides a loving home and public school for youth, age 11 through 18 years, many who have been abused or neglected. All aspects of the program address the individual needs of these vulnerable young people. The program features houseparents living with the youth in each cottage, rare among residential programs. They model caring relationships and provide stability in a family-like setting.
For children in need of immediate care out of crisis situations, White's also offers emergency shelter care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Family Services
White's foster care program helps abused, neglected, emotionally impaired, and disabled children and youth find loving homes. Through a network of regional offices statewide, White's recruits, trains and licenses foster parents and also places children in these foster homes. On any given day more than 350 children live in nearly 300 foster homes across Indiana that are supported and supervised by White's.
White's Jr./Sr. High School
White's is the only residential program in the state with a fully accredited public school on its grounds. White's Junior/Senior High School features a specialized teaching staff, a low student-to-teacher ratio, strict behavior standards, and mandatory study times. And, with the Credit Recovery Program, students can obtain academic credit for courses they lack for graduation or obtaining a G.E.D. diploma. At White's Junior/Senior High School, students often experience academic success unlike ever before.
Spiritual Life Program
Central to White's mission is the spiritual life program. Helping children find healing, hope and love, the program is staffed by White's pastors. It offers youth-oriented chapel services, Bible studies, prayer partners, summer Bible school, camp, Christian speakers, and concerts. Encouraged to serve others, youth participate in community service and mission projects. White's Christian foster homes provide direction through church and family activities.
Compass Rose Academy
Compass Rose Academy is a Christian organization committed to enriching the lives of children and families through emotional healing, personal development and spiritual growth.
Located in the Midwest, Compass Rose is designed to help teenage girls ages 14-18 and their families succeed at home and in life through both prevention services and a residential treatment center for troubled teen girls.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
White's Residential & Family Services is committed to offering hope and transformation by way of emotional healing, personal development, and spiritual growth, to children and families in the juvenile justice system, in foster care, and in need of home-based assistance. White's works to empower adolescents already involved with the juvenile system to continue their education, work with therapists, teachers, and counselors to address issues that hinder them, and attain independent living and vocational skills. White's also works with children and families in the foster care system, recruiting, training and supporting foster parents, with a focus on reunification or adoption. White's works with families at risk to empower them to remain intact and acquire the skills necessary to lead healthy lives. White's works with teenage girls and their families to strengthen, heal, and reconcile.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Residential:
White's offers academic credit recovery; therapeutic services (trauma treatment, cognitive and behavioral therapy; vocational training; training in independent living; attention to the spirit through voluntary chapel, prayer, entertainment opportunities.
Foster Care:
White's training of foster parents exceeds requirements by the state. Foster homes are given 24/7 support, assistance with services, respite care, and voluntary opportunities for spiritual renewal.
Family Services:
White's offers Father Engagement and assistance with financial, domestic, and parenting skills deemed necessary by local authorities.
Development and Professional Growth:
White's works to sustain diversity in funding streams and focuses a percentage of these revenues on professional development of its staff for personal growth, retention in emotionally difficult service areas, and for advancement within the organization.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
White's retains 254 part-time and full-time persons on its 800-acre campus in Wabash, Indiana, and its five regional offices throughout the state of Indiana.
For more than 160 years, White’s has helped families in crisis, in transition and in need of support through its accredited and comprehensive continuum of community-based services, foster care, adoption support and residential treatment programs. Our statewide network of facilities and seasoned providers allows us to support children, teens and families with a variety of services.
White's is accredited by the Council on Accreditation and collaborates with the National Foster Parent Association, the Indiana Correctional Association, the Indiana Association of Resource and Child Advocacy, the National Association of Christian Child and Family Agencies, the Children's Coalition of Indiana, among other local and national agencies.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
White's consistently ranks above the state average in residential and foster care services. Satisfaction scores range from 83% to 99%.
White's is in process of developing programmatic benchmarks and methodologies to track progress while also respecting the privacy of individuals and families. As data post-release depends upon voluntary participation in surveys, follow-up evaluations are not entirely indicative of true overall results.
White's seeks to expand capacity in all programs.
