Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Forest Watch

Heartwood's Forest Watch Program provides national leadership in challenging the privatization, commercialization, and exploitation of our nation's public lands, through education, administrative appeals, and litigation. We help people participate in the decision-making process for public lands through Forest Watch trainings, our Citizens Guide and other publications, our widely-distributed action alerts, and our easy-to-use web alerts. http://www.heartwood.org/alerts.phwe defend the public interest through the courts.

Population(s) Served

Heartwood
member organizations and network participants are active in community
organizing, permaculture, and local self-reliance. Following the model
Heartwood successfully adopted to coordinate regional forest protection
efforts, Heartwood is developing tools to coordinate similar efforts across the
Heartwood region. Through our events, publications, and website, we highlight
models of alternative energy and transportation, local and regional food
networks, and community and sustainable forestry.

Population(s) Served

Heartwood
supports and empowers individual activists, grassroots organizations, and local
communities through trainings, support services, direct assistance, and
coordination of efforts, including the sharing of resources, tools, and
information. Heartwood's two annual events, the Memorial Day Forest Council and
the Fall Reunion, help disseminate vital information, establish long-term
working relationships, and develop shared strategies in a spirit of unity and cooperation.
