Livelihood Improvement to Foster Economic Efficiency (LIFE)

Inadequate Access to Transportation
Barriers
to employment can reveal the extent to which poor people have problems that
either singly or in combination interfere with participating in training
programs, complying with new rules, and, ultimately, getting jobs, keeping
jobs, and increasing wages. Hence, many poor people, particularly those from
disadvantaged backgrounds, may also simultaneously face several barriers to
employment including lack of transportation due to affordability, and spatial
mismatch.Access to transportation by
low-income individuals and families is limited as the majority of low-income
households reside in rural areas and central cities, while basic amenities are
increasingly located in the suburbs. With new jobs emerging further and further
away from central cities, many low-income workers often have difficulty
accessing jobs, training and other services such as childcare because of
inadequate transportation. In addition, many minimum wage jobs require working
evening or weekend hours, but traditional transportation systems often do not
serve their routes during these times. Access to affordable transportation for
low-income workers, elderly residents, and children makes the trip to work,
school, and medical appointments possible. It fosters self-sustainability,
promotes independence, and permits spending on other household essentials.
Given these benefits, Global Aid Direct will demonstrate that affordable access
to transportation is indispensable by initiating Medical Appointment
Transportation Assistance, Ride to School, and Job Interview/Training
Transportation Assistance and Vehicle Purchase Assistance programs.
Lack of Enhanced Financial Literacy Education for
the Unbanked
While
Assets are critical to enabling poor and low-income families to build the
personal and financial resources they need to achieve and maintain
self-sufficiency, many Low-Income Families who wish to save fail to do so
because they lack the necessary self-discipline. Although many low-income
families strive to save, the lack of asset accumulation among the working poor
is an issue of growing national concern. This service will help bridge that gap
within our target area. This service intent to help people understand how to
prevent becoming involved in transactions that are fraudulent or financially destructive
specifically, for unbanked and underserved LMIs who may be unfamiliar with
personal financial management, or the elderly and persons with language
barriers, who are often targeted by dishonest vendors. It is also design to
help Low-income families build financial assets by educating them about the
advantages of traditional banking and helping them acquired the skills
necessary to manage ongoing banking activities. To help LMIs build assets,
Global Aid Direct will initiate a program called “Bank the Unbanked through
Financial Education”.
Refugee Settlement and Citizenship Education
With
the proliferation of conflicts globally, the issue of refugee resettlement
continues to hold relevance for policy makers, humanitarians and human rights
activists alike. Each year hundreds of thousands of refugees flee conflict and
persecution in their own countries to seek safety in neighboring states.
Refugee numbers worldwide stood at an all-time high of 17.4 million in 1991.
Estimates in recent years, however, have highlighted an encouraging trend: The
global refugee population has been steadily declining, going from 9.5 million
in 2005 to 8.4 million at the start of 2006 (UNHCR 2006).At the same time the international community
cannot afford to be complacent about nor indifferent to the plight of the
millions who even today continue to flee their homeland and languish in camps
in neighboring countries. For those who do make it to countries of asylum and
qualify for resettlement, the process of adapting to a new socio-cultural and
economic system can be a long and difficult one. To help refugees in the United
States gain access to the American Dream, Global Aid Direct will initiate a
Refugee Support Services and a Citizenship Education and Naturalization Application
Preparation Services.
