THAILAND HUMANITARIAN ACADEMIC INITIATIVE

aka Thainitiative   |   Pocatello, ID   |  www.thainitiative.org

Mission

We provide a wide range of academic and education-related support for these underfunded schools and underprivileged students. Aid ranges from direct cash donations for infrastructure improvements, transportation and/or education materials, to providing volunteer English-language instructors and support for poor families to allow their children to attend school instead of working.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Thai people value education. Like most places, however, the poor have limited education opportunities. Schools are funded from local revenue, placing poorer areas at a disadvantage. There are no school buses in Thailand. The remote location of many hill-tribe villages exacerbates the problem of just getting to a school. Thainitiative seeks to remove barriers for children who want to learn, whether those barriers are due to money, infrastructure or transportation needs. We believe that a solid education is the best way to for young people to reach their full potential and is a strong antidote to exploitation and human trafficking.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Hill-Tribe Bush Bus

We're sponsoring transportation for 14 hill-tribe children at Khun Nam Jon village so they can attend 7th & 8th grade at the Ban Sawa school in the valley below. The distance is just over 10 km but the road is very poor, requiring a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The students stay at Ban Sawa School for the week and make the journey back hme on the weekends.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Although primary education is compulsory in Thailand, many remote areas suffer from inadequate funding and deficient infrastructure. Additionally, many of the indigenous people in these remote areas are not considered citizens and are all but ignored by the government. Thainitiative's goal is to improve the academic opportunities of these disadvantaged children in the poorest and most under served regions of Thailand. We believe that education is the single most important factor in improving a person's economic and social status.

We work with local affiliates in Thailand to identify and vet schools and villages where there is a real need for improvement. Our strategy to date has been to undertake micro-projects at select schools to address an immediate need through targeted fundraising. Our long-term goal is to provide scholarships to attend college or trade school for students who could not otherwise afford it. English language proficiency is a desirable skill in Thailand but there are few English language instructors in the remote areas. By sponsoring volunteer English instructors we can offer another skill to improve the economic prospects for these children.

Rotjanee (Daphne) Larsen, CEO and Founder of Thainitiative, grew up in Thailand and is fluent in the language and culture. Our all-volunteer staff in Thailand consists of educators who live and work in Thailand and understand the issues and challenges facing these under served areas. Our Director of Education Services, Dr. Pimonpan Raper is a highly respected professor of English at East Asia University. Siri-On Sophon is an educator with the prestigious Kumon group of schools. Other volunteers are educators in Thailand's primary and secondary school system who are willing to devote their time and expertise to our mission.

We are able to leverage our academic, business and government contacts in Thailand to conduct successful humanitarian missions, avoiding the corruption and graft that is endemic in Thai society. This enables us to efficiently apply our financial resources to our mission. As an all-volunteer organization, we have very low overhead. 100% of donations go towards our goals.

So far we have impacted five village schools with several hundred students. Our English program was very well received and we are working to meet the demand from those schools for more volunteer English instructors. Our micro-project to finance the building of a new assembly hall at Ban Yot Doi was successful and the hall is now in use. Our micro-project to fund transportation for 42 students to attend Ban Mae Bam school was successful and spurred more donations from local Thai businesses. We are on track to provide dental education and services to several Nan Province villages in 2017, raising over $6000 of the $14000 needed for supplies and equipment.

We have not yet raised sufficient funds to sponsor a student to attend college or trade school. ~$10,000 is required for tuition and boarding. Once we near our funding goal, we will identify potential recipients. This is a long-term goal that we hope to expand to dozens, if not more, rural students.
