Mission

Founded in 1919 by Ada S. McKinley, an African-American educator and pioneer social worker, the agency serves individuals, families, and persons with disabilities in metropolitan Chicago, who need help in developing their abilities in order to lead healthy, productive and fulfilling lives. Over 90% of the persons served live at or below the poverty level. The agency involves the community in planning and providing program services. Its programs are comprehensive whereby the needs of the person are met throughout a lifetime within and without the family setting. The agency has a long tradition of delivering quality programs with fiscal integrity and prudence.

Human Services

ASMCS operates: (1) 6 Head Start programs; (2) 2 schools for children with multiple disabilities; (3) 3 job training centers and 5 janitorial sites for adults with multiple disabilities; (4) 1 alternative school for disruptive youth; (5) 1 foster care facility with children and youth in foster homes, homes of relative programs and specialized foster care; one emergency sibling shelter(5) 5 group homes (ICFDD) and 8 Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILA) facilities for adults with developmental disabilities; (6) 4 mental health centers, serving children and adults; (7) 1 educational service center that prepare, place and support students for college and post-graduate education; and (8) one site that provide nutrition, recreation, and advocacy for senior citizens and youth with after school programs.
