Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission of the Great Falls Community Food Bank (GFCFB) is to engage, educate and lead the community in the fight against hunger. We gather and distribute food to needy people via local charitable organizations. The Great Falls Community Food Bank envisions a community where all citizens have access to an adequate supply of nutritious food. In order to achieve our mission and vision, we live by the following guiding principles: exemplify responsible stewardship of resources; display professionalism; create partnerships; recognize the need to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

GFCFB serves 60+ agencies with food to feed the hungry in our area. Our logo mascot has always been a squirrel as we gather food in a variety of methods including the purchasing of food; the recovery of food items that we pick up with our refrigerated truck from stores and restaurants; and donations from the public through organized food drives and everyday receiving at our 8,000 square-foot warehouse, which includes large freezer and refrigerated spaces.

Our partner agencies “shop" for food in our warehouse Monday through Friday, taking what they need. Many of our items are given to the agencies at no cost with some other items costing agencies our “shared maintenance fee" which is currently .19 a pound. (e.g a $7 jar of peanut butter at a grocery store will cost agencies $.38 at the GFCFB).

Our most popular program is the “Backpacks4Kids Program" which feeds elementary school children on weekends and holidays throughout the school year.

The GFCFB is fortunate to have an incredibly capable team. We currently employ four full-time workers and one part time worker: An executive director; a fund development coordinator; two full-time warehouse workers and one part-time warehouse worker. Additionally, the GFCFB is governed by a 10-member board of directors who represent a cross section of the Great Falls community.

Our current executive director, Shaun Tatarka, is a Billings, MT native with vast experience in marketing, public relations and grant writing. He turned our CANtastic event into a major fundraiser, quadrupling its net gross in just three years. Our current board members are well-seasoned in their many fields: a hospital vice president, a public accountant, an attorney, and a facilities manager to name a few.

Our sources of funding include a mass mail campaign in the fall; a major fundraiser in March called CANtastic as well as grants and other charitable contributions.

We have served more than 5 million meals in the past four years, and are likely to see that number increase as we continue to expand programs and add partner agencies. We know through our partners that since 1982, we have helped thousands of children graduate high school; allowed countless seniors to buy meds and eat, rather than choosing; and helped many parents look for work on an full stomach. Most recently we added four additional Great Falls Public Elementary schools to our popular Backpacks4Kids program, which feeds underprovided children on weekends and holidays . We now serve 11 elementary schools for an average of 550 packs of weekend food per week during the school year. We are hoping to add three more in the next few years.
