Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Mission of the Edgewater Development Corporation is to attract new commercial business to the thriving Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago’s vibrant North Side and to help those new businesses succeed.

We are the first stop for business owners looking to start a business in Edgewater. Our organization serves as a catalyst, partner and coordinator for new commercial development. With these new businesses, we develop strategic plans for the long-term development of Edgewater’s commercial arteries, as well as individual plans which identify immediate commercial development opportunities. We do this by conducting an active commercial marketing and business recruitment program, and ensuring the viability of the community’s commercial areas through the ongoing identification of infrastructure, parking, transportation, zoning, capital and physical needs. We can also help prospective business owners with site selection, licensing, questions, training and more.

Our organization has connections with the local Alderman's office of the 48th ward and the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce. We are also connected to many brokers and realtors which conduct business in the area, keeping us updated on available properties for lease and for sale. Networking in the community provides us with additional resources for all types of businesses, including women owned businesses, connections in the theatre district, and even our neighboring wards and neighborhoods.

With all these connections, EDC is able to provide prospective and current business owners with all the help they might need in any area, whether that be directing them to the right contact or advocating for them throughout their journey.

In 2018, the Edgewater Development Corporation continued its mission of business attraction and economic development for the Edgewater neighborhood. Thanks to our resource tools, partnerships with community stakeholders, and local government, we welcomed over 50 new businesses to the neighborhood in 2018, along with several new or redeveloped residential projects. When coupled with an additional 22 businesses expected to open in early 2019, it is easy to see that Edgewater’s reputation as a business destination continues to grow.

At the end of 2018, Edgewater’s commercial vacancy rate was a very low 5.5%, as compared to an overall City of Chicago rate of over 10%. We continue to see growth in multiple categories, including retail, entertainment, and family-focused businesses. Examples include SoundOff Productions, who have built their online business into a successful brick and mortar operation; The Boxcar at Steep Theatre, an expansion providing additional performance space and a lobby bar; and Edgewater Playhouse, one of the only toddler play environments in the area.

In 2019, we are continually meeting with new and existing businesses to assess the health of the business district, and we send monthly reports to the Chicago Department Business Affairs and Consumer Protection describing the work we do each month highlighting a business in the community.
