What we aim to solve
While there are many factors that can contribute to crash and fatalities, human error is the constant variable that plays a part in the majority of crashes. The evolution of advanced driver assistance technology have made great strides, and one day fully automated cars that drive us will become a reality. Until that time, and even with new technology, human error will continue to factor into mitigating the risk. Safe driving begins with behavior. How can a program like this add value and influence change? Consider the factors that influence our behavior. Some of these factors are internal and depend directly on us and our motivation. But more are influenced by our friends, family and the environment we put ourselves in. The most challenging factor is willpower – a genuine desire to change something. Other factors include knowledge and skills, social motivation and ability, and structural motivation and ability.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
D3 2014
New Jersey, New York and Connecticut high school students are invited to compete in a competition designed to raise awareness about safe driving issues. Participants will develop a production ready public service announcement (PSA) video. The winning campaign will be produced and distributed by a grant from the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation.
The task for D3 2014 contestants is to write a script for a PSA video that features teens showing adults how to be safe drivers.
PSAs will be judged based on the contest participant’s clarity and conciseness of their safe driving message and the creativity they choose to deliver that message.
To be eligible for the contest, participants must get parental permission and register online. Registration will open on January 2 and close on February 28 March 31. After registering, a contestant may submit their materials anytime between January 2 and March 31.
After a public voting phase to determine the top ten entries, the grand prize winner will be selected by an outside panel of judges, experts in the field of teen safe driving. The winner will be announced at a ceremony scheduled for May 3.
The grand prize winner will have their choice of a brand new car or college scholarship. A conciliation prize will be awarded to the second place finisher.
Dealers Driving Road Safety
Dealers Driving Road Safety was launched in 2010 to showcase dealer involvement in various aspects of driving and traffic safety. Statistics support the need for greater awareness and education in all aspects of traffic safety.
The advancement driver assistance technology can help mitigate crashes, however, human error is the constant variable that plays a part in the majority of vehicle related fatalities.
Safe driving begins by influencing behavior change. Behaviors are influenced by our friends, family and the environment we put ourselves in. Other factors include knowledge and skills, social motivation and ability, and structural motivation and ability. This work will be primarily focused on awareness and actionable steps through social motivation and ability.
So Let's Do This
37,133 PEOPLE DIED IN MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES IN 2017.
THIS HAS TO CHANGE
National Foundation for Teen Safe Driving in collaboration with National Automobile Dealers Association is establishing a unique distribution channel of member dealers and industry affiliates to create an unparalleled network of driving and safety advocates raising awareness of the facts and championing evidenced-based strategies that can save lives.
If one voice can make a change, consider what a million voices could do.
First, we need to understand why so many crashes happen. Today, advancements in technology have accelerated the development of more and more safety features in vehicles. The evolution of advanced driver assistance technology has made great strides, and one day fully automated cars that drive us will become a reality. Until that time, and even with new technology, human error will continue to add to the risk of fatal crashes. Here are some of the facts:
• In 2016 almost half of vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts.
• For teens, car crashes continue to be among the leading cause of death. The leading cause of the crashes is driver inexperience
• 908 child passengers died in crashes in 2016. An estimated 46% of child passenger restraints are incorrectly installed or misused.
• Almost half of motorcycle riders who die in single-vehicle crashes are alcohol-impaired
So what can be done today to mitigate the risk of fatal crashes?
We will create campaign messages and calls to action, prepare all campaign materials and talking points, manage each campaign and nation-wide distribution, and provide you with instruction and guidance.
We ask participants to help us spread the word and raise awareness by integrating prepared safety messages into your marketing and customer communications? That all we’re asking participating dealers to do.
But we can’t do it alone and we are asking for your support. And we’re making it simple.
There is no more relevant a cause for the US Automotive Industry to get involved with than driving and traffic safety. We can talk about making a difference or we can make a difference.
So let’s do this and together we will save lives.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
NFTSD believes that we have a shared responsibility in helping to keep teens safe, starting with parents and expanding to business and industry, especially those in the automotive industry. One of our key focus areas is to continue to connect businesses to their individual community needs and build the alliances necessary to create a culture of safety. Working together we can prevent these teen tragedies.
NFTSD
1. Engages exclusively in charitable, literary, educational and scientific activities within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code of 1986
2. Is organized exclusively for educational purposes, namely, promoting safe and responsible driving habits among teens through education, action and advocacy.
3. Promotes teen safe driving and raise awareness to teens and adults about the dangers of distracted, drunk, drugged and other unsafe driving habits.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Since our program began in 2008 as the DCH Teen Safe Driving Program, our objective has been to engage retail auto dealers in the teen safe driving cause. Today as NFTSD expands its work, our focus on working with retail auto dealers remains the primacy avenue for our advocacy.
Directors and officers of NFTSD know the retail auto industry and are well known and well respected among all segments of the auto industry. Over the years, Foundation executive board members have worked closely and built strong relationships with many auto manufacturers. The same Foundation board members are actively involved with retail auto associations including National Automobile Dealers Association and state retail associations.
We have nurtured relationships with many other teen safety advocates; Susan Scarola is the Chairman of SADD’s Board of Directors and Roy Bavaro is the Treasurer of the NOYS Board. Roy Bavaro is also an active member of three state teen safe driving coalitions. We are uniquely positioned to keep abreast of teen safe driving research and development while bridging the gap to Toyota retailers. Our relationships with SADD and other youth serving organizations will ensure robust teen and parent participation.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
