What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Members of our communities face civil legal problems that threaten their basic human needs, but do not have the resources to hire private lawyers. Some of these legal problems are unique to people experiencing poverty such as the need for public benefits. Other issues include domestic violence, family abuse, evictions or utility shut-offs, mortgage foreclosures, lack of access to needed medical care and similar issues. Prairie State provides legal services at no charge for eligible persons. We also provide legal counsel to help people understand their legal rights and obligations so they can avoid legal problems or resolve some legal problems on their own.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

1. To ensure low-income residents have access to our system of justice.

2. To protect eligible persons from serious risk to health or safety in those situations where a legal solution can remedy the issue.

3. To ensure that eligible persons are able to meet their basic human needs.

4. To enable eligible persons to preserve or obtain income or assets or benefits needed to improve their ability to meet their basic human needs or to better care for members of their household.

5. To improved people with disabilities' opportunities to be self-sufficient and/or to maximize personal autonomy.

Legal representation is provided, when appropriate, to protect vulnerable persons from harm or to aid persons in meeting their basic human needs.

In partnership with Illinois Legal Aid Online, we offer online access to legal information and potential linkage to individualized legal services.

To extent resources permit, offer individualized legal advice to enable people to avoid legal problems or solve legal problems themselves.

Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteer attorneys to expand the legal help available at no charge for low-income persons.

Work with the community to find solutions to problems.

Recruit and train non-attorney volunteers to aid in outreach efforts and expansion of services.

The organization has an extensive training program for its staff members and excellent supervision. The staff members are committed to excellence in services and sensitive to the needs of our client community. We have a core of highly-experienced attorneys each with more than 20 years of experience available to assist other staff attorneys in responding to client needs.

Our Telephone Counseling Service includes highly-experienced attorneys who provide excellent legal counsel to eligible callers.

The organization has very strong fiscal controls to ensure the fiscal health of the organization.

Prairie State has focused on providing client-centered legal services and this is reflected in positive outcomes and positive client satisfaction with services.

We have increased volunteer involvement in service delivery and this expands the services we can provide.

While we have these positive accomplishments, we are not able to fully serve all low-income persons with urgent legal problems. Demand exceeds our capacity and this is a challenge.
