The Menninger Clinic
Advancing treatment. Transforming lives.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Today, an estimated one in five Americans is living with a diagnosable mental illness. Demand for quality mental health care is growing; however, the United States faces an increasing shortage of mental health care providers, with more than half of U.S. counties lacking access to even one practicing psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. At The Menninger Clinic, we are committed to providing personalized, evidence-based mental health treatment, conducting scientific research and training expert clinicians who are ready to lead the future of mental health care.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Outpatient Treatment
Menninger offers comprehensive outpatient psychiatric services for adults, adolescents and children at two locations in Houston: our main campus near the Texas Medical Center and a satellite clinic located in Bellaire. These services include individual, group and family psychotherapy; medication management; and 4.5-day outpatient psychiatric assessments that enhance knowledge of psychiatric symptoms and core issues. In addition, Menninger offers Pathfinder, a psychosocial rehabilitation and community reintegration program that helps clients translate insight into action and transition to successful, independent living. Brain stimulation services are also provided for individuals with severe depression and other treatment-resistant illnesses. Most recently, Menninger opened an Adolescent Day Hospital, creating a new outpatient, step-down option for adolescents transitioning out of inpatient care, and the opportunity for those receiving outpatient services to step up to more intensive treatment. Patients in the day hospital receive treatment from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and return home overnight. The convenience and accessibility of our outpatient services make it possible for patients and families to benefit from Menninger’s highly effective and multifaceted approach to mental health care.
Inpatient Treatment
Menninger’s inpatient care comprises five core programs, including the Adolescent Treatment Program, which provides psychiatric stabilization and assessment for ages 12–17; the Compass Program for Young Adults, which serves patients aged 18–30 who are having difficulty managing the transition from adolescence to adulthood; the Hope Program for Adults, which helps adults with complex illness who are unable to meet important personal and vocational goals; the Professionals Program, which serves high-achieving individuals who are experiencing difficulty in their careers due to a mental disorder, substance use or stress; and the Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment Service, which provides customized stabilization and thorough diagnostic services for adults. Within a safe, secure environment, Menninger’s experienced staff uses evidence-based therapies to build an individualized program that addresses each patient’s unique needs. Through our integrated therapeutic environment, we help patients gain insight to all aspects of their lives: medical, social, psychological, biological and spiritual.
Training
For nearly 100 years, Menninger has been a renowned training ground for the nation’s best psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and psychiatric nurses, who learn to attend to patients’ physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Today, we are a primary psychiatric teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine and one of the only training sites in the nation where trainees gain in-depth knowledge of, and first-hand experience with, complex mood and personality disorders. In the past five years, Menninger trained more than 250 mental health professionals and contributed to the education of nearly 700 nursing, medical and pharmacy students. While trainees at other psychiatric hospitals may only spend a few hours with a patient, at Menninger, our trainees work closely with patients and families for several weeks as they move beyond addressing symptoms to healing core mental health issues. As members of a patient’s multidisciplinary care team, trainees expand their clinical perspective by collaborating with other professionals of varying backgrounds and specializations. This unique educational environment allows Menninger to prepare mental health providers, who are at the top of their field, care for patients with true understanding and precision.
Research
To make the greatest impact in healing mental illnesses, it’s imperative to understand what treatment works, for whom and why. A leader in the study of complex mental illnesses, Menninger partnered with Baylor College of Medicine to create one of the world’s largest repositories of clinical mental health data. Since this landmark initiative launched in 2011, Menninger has collected genetic sequences, brain scans, microbiome samples and self-reported surveys of treatment outcomes from thousands of individuals. Attention has now shifted to analyzing this vast resource and leveraging its data into action. Most recently, Menninger began investigations in new areas of research, such as sleep science and wearable technology, to better understand and prevent suicide during inpatient psychiatric treatment. Through research, The Clinic is committed to making discoveries that increase understanding of mental illnesses and the factors that impact treatment outcomes.
The Gathering Place
The Gathering Place is a psychosocial clubhouse that offers local adults with severe and persistent mental illness a compassionate and inclusive peer community. Originally founded in Houston in 1984, The Gathering Place became a program of The Clinic in 2010. Today, it provides a welcoming environment where individuals with conditions such as major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder find support and participate in free vocational, volunteer and wellness activities.
BridgeUp at Menninger
BridgeUp at Menninger is a program that cultivates collaboration between schools and non-profit organizations to create networks of mental health support for vulnerable youth. BridgeUp has facilitated social and emotional learning programs, as well as mental health referrals, for thousands of students in the greater Houston area. Through the program, partner schools and organizations may also refer students identified as at-risk for a mental health issue to Menninger or other facilities for sponsored assessment and treatment.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Menninger aims to save and transform the lives of people who are seeking to manage and improve their mental health, from handling life challenges to receiving treatment for the most complex illnesses. We accomplish our goal through innovative programs in treatment, research, training and outreach that help to address the needs of patients locally and across the nation. Our intent is to lead advancements in mental health care and remain a nationally ranked “best hospital” in psychiatry.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies to sustain and enhance the very best treatment for people affected by mental illnesses include:
Provide Value to Our Patients: Every patient will strongly recommend The Menninger Clinic to their family and friends.
Take Care of Our People: Every employee will strongly recommend The Menninger Clinic as a best place to work.
Take Care of Our Money: Generate adequate clinical resources and use best practices to raise charitable funds in support of Menninger’s mission and vision.
Advance Knowledge: Support the education mission of our academic affiliate, Baylor College of Medicine, and demonstrate and continually improve the value of our care.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
For nearly a century, The Menninger Clinic has been dedicated to transforming the lives of patients through clinical innovation, research and training, and is nationally renowned for improving the lives of those who suffer from mental illness. The Clinic functions as a primary psychiatric teaching hospital for our affiliate, Baylor College of Medicine, and operates on a 50-acre campus as a member of the Texas Medical Center to accelerate future advancements in mental health treatment. The Clinic comprises five inpatient treatment programs as well as outpatient therapy and psychiatric assessment services. Menninger is currently ranked as the No. 5 psychiatric hospital in the United States, and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a top psychiatric hospital for 30 consecutive years ― every year the list has been published.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Menninger achieved much success in the previous year, accomplishing or surpassing many of The Clinic’s goals. Below, we have provided a few highlights from the past year’s accomplishments:
Provide Value to Our Patients
- For 30 consecutive years, The Clinic has been named as one of the nation’s best hospitals, earning a ranking of the No. 5 ranked psychiatric hospital in the past year.
Take Care of Our People
- Our annual Employee Engagement Survey revealed that 66 percent of Team Menninger is “engaged,” which surpassed a national benchmark score of 53 percent.
- Since 2006, The Clinic has been designated as a “Pathway to Excellence” by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, identifying Menninger as a best place to working for nurses.
Take Care of Our Money
- The Clinic generated approximately $54,447,895 in gross patient revenue, which was 99 percent of our goal.
- The Clinic generated earnings of $1,725,348, which represented a 4.7 percent return in net revenue.
Advance Knowledge:
- Menninger provided graduate medical education to 19 psychiatry residents and six child psychiatry fellows.
-Menninger also provided clinical education and training for 11 undergraduate medical students, 90 nursing students, two psychology post-doctoral fellows, one psychology PhD intern, three social work fellows, four social work interns, six pharmacy doctoral candidates and more.
The Clinic is continuing to improve upon our commitment to value-based mental health care to further optimize patient outcomes while minimizing cost. In accordance with this commitment, The Clinic implemented a new Electronic Health Record to increase patient safety and access to clinical data system wide. We are expanding the reach of our community outreach services through The Gathering Place, which is in the midst of a $769,000 capital campaign, and BridgeUp at Menninger, where we worked with community nonprofits and members last year to improve the mental health and well-being for thousands of students in the greater Houston area. Lastly, The Clinic is dedicated to continuing to sustain and advance the quality of care, education and research provided by Menninger, and we are excited about the opportunity to increase our capacity to serve even more patients suffering from mental illness through our inpatient and outpatient services.
