What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Biogas for Vietnamese Farmers
Farmers, like Nguyen Thi Ut, who make up 70-80% of the local economy in southern Vietnam, are coming up against the limits of the environment. One of the issues is the discharge of fresh animal dung into open gutters and community waterways which poses a health risk. This problem can be turned into a sustainable solution by using biodigestion to treat animal waste which produces a methane- based biogas that can be used for cooking or lighting. Thiện Chí, one of our partners in Vietnam, has successfully promoted a biogas system which is cheap, efficient, long lasting and easy to install. It is a clean source of renewable energy which reduces CO2 emissions, disease and deforestation by alleviating the need for wood or coal.
Compost Latrines for Guatemalan Families
Did you know that in 2004, over 15% of the deaths in children under age 5 in Guatemala were due to diarrhea caused by poor sanitation? Valentina Arguete lives in Colonia Cristo El Salvador, a village in Guatemala, where the most common bathroom facility is a hole dug in the ground. Valentina worries because she knows it is a breeding ground for organisms which spread diseases that could endanger the lives of her family. Amigas Del Sol (ADS), our partner in Guatemala, is helping to prevent this by building four dry Composting Latrines for the four families with the greatest need.
Vietnamese School Children Recycle Plastic to Fund Scholarships
Did you know that in rural Vietnam, over 100 million tons of trash accumulates each year? And, only 30-40% of this trash is being picked up. We’ve partnered with Vietnamese NGO Anh Duong to help combat this problem by setting up programs that will raise environmental awareness among Vietnamese school children. The program will teach children about the effects of pollution and organize drives to collect plastic waste and recycle it. The funds raised will offer awards to participating schools which will be used for school improvement and scholarships for poor students.
