Ballard Knitters for the Homeless

Who we are: people who have never knit before, people who haven’t knit in a long time, and people who are knitting pros! We are happy to teach you to knit or work on a new pattern, and it’s okay if there are mistakes – they’re just as warm and it shows some sincerity. Come enjoy the opportunity to create and keep others warm.

Population(s) Served
Homeless people

We believe, for a society to be sustainable, each of its members must have access to wholesome food and safe shelter, and be treated with dignity. As such, we participate with two programs in Ballard ~
Ballard Sunday Dinner and the Edible Hope Meals Program

Population(s) Served
Homeless people

What is a tool library?
Just like a normal library, a tool library is a sustainable public service that provides community access to tools and an exchange of knowledge, at little to no cost.
What kinds of tools does Ballard Tool Library (BTL) have?
Whatever you need! We use a very loose definition of “tool,” therefore our members can expect to find the usual drills, saws, etc. as well as sewing machines, juicers, marlinspikes, compost aerators, and many other dealy-bobs and whatchamacallits! We aim to build a collection that represents Ballard artists, craftspeople, gardeners, mariners, and putterers.

Population(s) Served
Adults

A letter home. That could be the first small step to reconnecting homeless individuals with their loved ones, to re-establish a relationship long neglected, or simply to say “I’m ok”.
Free Letters Home™ offers the homeless community the opportunity to reestablish relationships and connect with loved ones via a mailed letter or card. Volunteers from this organization set up a table and offer greeting cards, postcards, stationery, stamps, help and encouragement in hopes that our guests will take the opportunity to write and mail a card or letter.

Homeless people

Have you ever stumbled across a tiny home filled with books, in someone’s front yard, and wondered what that’s all about? It was probably a Little Free Library™ (a national program). Examples of Little Free Libraries around the country and the world can be found here. They’re going up all over and we’re helping to spread the fun throughout Ballard.
We are building community and spreading literacy by building or hosting Little Free Libraries for ourselves, and then using our experience to help others build or host their own Little Libraries.

Population(s) Served
Adults

In this program, volunteers glean baked goods donated by two local bakeries and deliver them to the Edible Hope Meals Program, and glean produce donated by the Ballard Farmers Market for delivery to the Ballard Food Bank.

Population(s) Served
Economically disadvantaged people

The Meaningful Movies Project is a non-profit organization that screens free documentaries within Puget Sound area neighborhoods. The screenings are intended to raise awareness, encourage dialogue and create positive change. Opportunities for discussion follow each screening.
Sustainable Ballard has partnered with Meaningful Movies to present documentaries in our neighborhood.

Population(s) Served

In many areas of Seattle including Ballard, property owners can get beautiful and functional landscaping, and store rain water for watering gardens, with up to 100% of the cost paid by a rebate from the City of Seattle or King County. Sustainable Ballard manages part of this program.
