What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Civil Society
We work to foster engaged, empowered and equitable communities throughout the world. Our program areas:
• Strengthening Civic Space: We strive to promote, protect and reinvigorate the space for civic engagement.
• Enhancing Community Philanthropy: We support the development of community foundations that foster just, equitable and sustainable societies.
• Increasing Access to Justice: We promote social equity in communities by increasing access to justice.
• Special Initiatives: We support unique opportunities to advance the Civil Society mission.
Education
We fund efforts to expand learning opportunities and supports for children, particularly those from low‑ and moderate-income communities. Our program areas:
• Advancing Afterschool: We work to increase access to quality educational opportunities for all children — particularly those from low-income families and underserved communities.
• Graduating High School College & Career Ready: We strive to increase high school graduation and college and career readiness outcomes for young people, particularly those living in low-income communities.
• Youth Engagement: We strive to provide more meaningful opportunities for young people to participate in their schools, communities and the economy.
• Special Initiatives: We seek to respond to new strategies, unique opportunities and changing social, economic and political contexts.
Environment
We support programs around the world that protect communities and the ecosystems upon which they depend. Our program areas:
• Addressing the Freshwater Challenge: We support efforts to secure sustainable levels of clean water for people and the environment, particularly in the Great Lakes basin.
• Transforming Development Finance: We aim to shape international investment policies for energy and infrastructure projects in ways that protect people and the environment in developing nations.
• Advancing Climate Change Solutions: We work to increase the use of renewable energy in developing countries, where more than 1 billion people lack access to electricity.
• Special Initiatives: We support unique opportunities to advance environmental protection.
Flint Area
We support efforts to help our hometown of Flint, Michigan, solve problems, create opportunities and build a vibrant future for the community and its residents. Our program areas:
• Revitalizing the Education Continuum: We work to increase educational opportunities that will help Flint area children, youth and adults achieve success in the classroom and the workplace.
• Enriching Lives Through Arts and Culture: We support local arts and cultural organizations as critical forces for positive change in Flint.
• Restoring Community Vitality: We support efforts to stimulate local job growth, revitalize the city center and spark new economic energy in the greater Flint area.
• Meeting Evolving Community Needs: We work to strengthen the capacity of Flint area programs and organizations to help children and families meet their needs and improve their lives.
