Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Art Exhibitions
The SC strongly upholds its mission "to stimulate the artistic sense of the people of the greater Detroit area toward practical expression, advance the knowledge and appreciation of creative artistic activity and assist other cultural institutions in the promotion of the arts.” Perhaps the most vital component to the success of the club’s mission is the showcase and promotion of emerging and established local artists during revolving juried and invitational gallery exhibitions.
Exhibition jurors, curators and invitational artists are selected by the gallery director in conjunction with the Art Advisory Committee, who are drawn from local art school faculty, artists, and arts administrators. The SC strives to select individuals with interest in a wide range of style and media, including such leading Michigan artists as Sue Carmen-Vian, Lester Johnson, Mary Fortuna, Charles McGee, and Scott Hocking.
Curated exhibitions honor artists and art organizations that have made significant contributions to the local artistic community and as such have hosted show that feature such arts organizations as Signal-Return, Michigan Watercolor Society, the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, and Pewabic Pottery. All exhibitions have a strong educational component, drawing audiences interested in the work and in the cultural identity of the artists. Each year, a senior artist in the community is chosen to have a solo exhibition and sign the "beam" in the Lounge, a tradition that honors those important to the arts in Detroit. In 2018, an exhibition of the work of Lois Teicher -- whose sculpture is in front of the Scarab Club in the Hudson Art Park -- will recognize this seminal Detroit artist. Exhibitions are planned both to reveal new local talent, honor important older artists, and explore themes, materials, and approaches.
Sketch Sessions
The Scarab Club offers four weekly sketch sessions with models, both costume and live, open to the public for a nominal fee and offered free of charge to SC members and students. This historic program is one of the few in the area that is open to the public.
