Programs and results
What we aim to solve
At Pewabic, we feel that art is an integral part of life, providing inspiration and sense of community. Pewabic is a nationally recognized design studio and ceramic arts education center. We serve as a vibrant creative hub supporting the economic, cultural and physical revitalization of Detroit, and continue to provide lifelong cultural learning experiences to a broad and diverse audience. One of the oldest continuously operating potteries in the nation, Pewabic has uniquely remained an active contemporary pottery and multifaceted arts center. Operating out of our National Historic Landmark facility on Detroit's east side, we create ceramic art; provide a wide array of educational programs (including outreach projects serving many underserved youth); and serve as a gallery for contemporary ceramic art and artists. Through our museum exhibits and archival repository, Pewabic serves the scholarly needs of art historians and enthusiasts within our state and nationwide.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Handcrafting Ceramic Art and Tile
Pewabic has been handcrafting pottery and tile in Detroit since 1903. Our National Historic Landmark pottery is open seven days a week throughout the year. Visitors can tour our historic studio and exhibits, see and interact with our artisans as they work, and view work by more than 100 ceramic artists from across North America.
Ceramic Arts Education
Pewabic provides learning experiences to the general public, both youth and adults, through on-site and off-site classes, workshops and exhibitions.
Historic Preservation
Pewabic preserves its historic legacy by conserving our rich archival collection of pottery, tiles, drawings, correspondence and other paper materials that date back to our founder, Mary Chase Perry Stratton, in the early 20th Century.
