Solid Rock Housing Support
Rebuilding upon a firm foundation
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
An overwhelming theme is that community residents are making serious compromises to pay their housing costs. Many have described watching their living situations deteriorate ― mold, blocked drainpipes, an oven that didn’t work for a year ― even as their costs kept increasing. Frustrated with the rising costs and even landlords who refused to make any fixes people are moving farther from town or back in with family members. In nearly every situation, someone mentioned fearing homelessness, eviction, a job loss or a medical bill with their greatest fear of an unexpected home repair and increasing property taxes. Renters worried about losing their subsidized housing. Rural residents feared the costs of car maintenance. One person said her greatest worry was that she would not be able to remain in her home after her husband died. Finally, anger and frustration with barriers to building houses, the lack of subsidies for affordable housing and rent control.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Housing Education
We offer housing education workshops focused on basic home maintenance, money management, and on-the-job training opportunities.
Housing Maintenance Check-Ups
We teach you how the systems in your house work and how to plan for future repairs. The home maintenance check-up is a post-purchase home inspection service that will help you identify priority repair items, plan for routine maintenance, and connect you with relevant resources.
Housing Repair
We partner with local businesses, community organizations, and individual volunteers to help families stay in their homes, allow seniors to age in place, and preserve the character and culture of our local communities.
Tool Library
Our library, launching later in 2019, will operate essentially like any library, except you can check out tools instead of books. Our goal is, in short, to build community. The library will help to create a sense of neighborhood community and resource general improvements to the community’s homes and properties.
Upon paying a small membership fee, you can check out tools for one week, and then just return them to the library.
Solid Rock Depot
We operate three retail stores and donation centers that offer new and used home improvement goods at a fraction of the retail price. These locations are locally owned with proceeds going toward the preservation of homes in Muskegon County.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Funding through the local foundation and corporate grants, as well as the support of local donors, help cover program costs. Volunteer labor donated materials and a co-pay system help to reduce trade costs. We also leverage Depot profits and mortgage remittances from previous home buyers.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Solid Rock Housing Support was first known as Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity and began in 1985 when a group of volunteers decided to devote their time toward affordable housing in their community. For three decades, Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity made a lasting impact through affordable housing programs that offered low-income families stability through homeownership.
In 2018, Solid Rock Housing Support completed housing repairs for over 15 families that included roof repairs, wheelchair accessibility ramps, window replacement plus the list goes on. In 2019, we are projecting to complete repairs for 50 families.
We operate three retail stores and donation centers, formerly known as Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity ReStores, that offer new and used home improvement goods at a fraction of the retail price. Thousands of tons of refuse are kept out of our local landfills each year because of Depot donors.
